POST CONVERSATION BANTER
David: On the one hand, the passenger is sort of being unrealistic.
Melody: 冇錯。(mou5 co3.)
David: On the other hand, in the Hong Kong airport, usually you only need one kind of ID.
Melody: 可能,應該只係需要護照。(ho2 nang4, jing3 goi1 zi2 hai6 seoi1 jiu3 wu6 ziu3.)
David: Yeah I have never needed anything else with my passport. So you are good enough with one. Don’t be scared about coming to Hong Kong if you only have a passport.
Melody: 可能個乘客長得特別奇怪。(ho2 nang4 go3 sing4 haak3 zoeng5 dak1 dak6 bit6 kei4 gwaai3.)
David: Yeah.
Melody: 所以先查得嚴啲。(so2 ji3 sin1 caa4 dak1 jim4 di1.)

David: When you get this in Hong Kong, don’t lose it. It is important.

Melody: 護照 (wu6 ziu3)
David: Or your driver’s license.
Melody: 駕駛證 (gaa3 sai2 zing3)
David: Driver’s license.
Melody: 駕駛證 (gaa3 sai2 zing3)
David: So those are three critical pieces of ID.
Melody: 身份證,護照,駕駛證。(san1 fan2 zing3, wu6 ziu3, gaa3 sai2 zing3.)
David: All of these papers are known as documentation.
Melody: 證件。(zing3 gin2.)
David: Melody, can you give us a sample sentence.
Melody: 譬如話,身份證係一種證件。(pei3 jyu4 waa6, san1 fan2 zing3 hai6 jat1 zung2 zing3 gin2.)
David: Your ID card is a kind of documentation.
Melody: 身份證係一種證件。(san1 fan2 zing3 hai6 jat1 zung2 zing3 gin2.)
David: Or the ID card is a kind of documentation.
Melody: 冇錯。(mou5 co3.)
David: Finally when you are getting on a plane, you are going to be asked to show your ID.
Melody: 出示證件。(ceot1 si6 zing3 gin2.)
David: To show identification.
Melody: 請出示證件。(cing2 ceot1 si6 zing3 gin2.)
David: Right. That’s “please show us your ID”.
Melody: 請出示證件。(cing2 ceot1 si6 zing3 gin2.)
David: Right. The verb there is
Melody: 出示 (ceot1 si6)
David: And it can mean to present, to display but you’ve got to show it to someone.
Melody: 出示 (ceot1 si6)
David: So remember, the most critical vocab here are these four kinds of identification you are going to need to travel.
Melody: 登機證 (dang1 gei1 zing3)
David: Boarding pass.
Melody: 身份證 (san1 fan2 zing3)
David: ID card.
Melody: 護照 (wu6 ziu3)
David: Passport.
Melody: 駕駛證 (gaa3 sai2 zing3)
David: Driver’s license; and when you are asked, you are going to be asked to show documentation.
Melody: 請出示證件。(cing2 ceot1 si6 zing3 gin2.)
David: And with that, let’s get on to our grammar point which is about how to say “or” in Cantonese.

Lesson focus

David: Our grammar point today is about how to say or in Cantonese.
Melody: 定。(ding6.)
David: Right. We hear this in the following line in our dialogue.
Melody: 要身份証定護照?(jiu3 san1 fan2 zing3 ding6 wu6 ziu3?)
David: Do you want an ID card or passport“?
Melody: 要身份証定護照?(jiu3 san1 fan2 zing3 ding6 wu6 ziu3?)
David: Right. So we’ve got two choices and we are giving someone the choice of either A or B.
Melody: 身份証 定 護照 (san1 fan2 zing3 ding6 wu6 ziu3)
David: The critical word here is
Melody: 定 (ding6)
David: “Or”
Melody: 定 (ding6)
David: And usage is easy. We just put this between two nouns.
Melody: 冇錯。(mou5 co3.)
David: Right. In our dialogue of course, it’s ID card or passport.
Melody: 身份証 定 護照 (san1 fan2 zing3 ding6 wu6 ziu3 )
David: But you can use any nouns for this.
Melody: 係呀,冇錯。(hai6aa3, mou5 co3.)
David: Right. So you could say passport or driver's license.
Melody: 護照 定 駕駛證 (wu6 ziu3 ding6 gaa3 sai2 zing3 )
David: Do you want my passport or my driver’s license.
Melody: 你要護照 定 駕駛證?(nei5 jiu3 wu6 ziu3 ding6 gaa3 sai2 zing3?)
David: Or if you are traveling, you can ask someone, China or Hong Kong?
Melody: 中國定香港?(zung1 gwok3 ding6 hoeng1 gong2?)
David: Do you want to go to China or Hong Kong?
Melody: 你要去中國定香港?(nei5 jiu3 heoi3 zung1 gwok3 ding6 hoeng1 gong2?)
David: If you are still having trouble with Cantonese, you might ask someone if they want to speak English or Cantonese.
Melody: 英文定廣東話? (jing1 man2 ding6 gwong2 dung1 waa2?)
David: Do you want to speak English or Cantonese?
Melody: 你哋想講英文定廣東話?(nei5 dei6 soeng2 gong2 jing1 man2 ding6 gwong2 dung1 waa2?)
David: Do you want to speak English or Cantonese?
Melody: 你想講英文定廣東話?(nei5 soeng2 gong2 jing1 man2 ding6 gwong2 dung1 waa2?)
David: And if you remember, in our last lesson, we covered how to buy a computer. When you go to the store, the salesperson might ask you, do you want a laptop or a desktop computer.
Melody: 你想要手提電腦定枱式電腦?(nei5 soeng2 jiu3 sau2 tai4 din6 nou5 ding6 toi4 sik1 din6 nou5?)
David: Do you want a laptop or a desktop?
Melody: 你想要手提電腦定枱式電腦?(nei5 soeng2 jiu3 sau2 tai4 din6 nou5 ding6 toi4 sik1 din6 nou5?)
David: So this is actually – it’s a really easy grammar point right?
Melody: 係呀,冇錯。(hai6 aa3, mou5 co3.)
David: It is just one sound.
Melody: 定 (ding6)
David: You just have to get used to putting it in between two nouns.
Melody: 除咗名詞之外,動詞都可以。(ceoi4 zo2 ming4 ci4 zi1 ngoi6, dung6 ci4 dou1 ho2 ji3.)
David: You just have to remember to put it between two nouns or two verbs.
Melody: 冇錯。動詞都可以。(mou5 co3. dung6 ci4 dou1 ho2 ji3.)
David: Yes. Do you want to eat or shop?
Melody: 你想食飯定行街?(nei5 soeng2 sik6 faan6 ding6 haang4 gaai1?)
