Cantonese Survival phrases, lesson 31. Directions. In today’s lesson, we will introduce you to directions that will help you find places. In an earlier lesson, we introduced, is there a place near here? 呢度有冇 x?(ni1 dou6 jau5 mou5 x) , is there a place near here 呢度有冇 x?(ni1 dou6 jau5 mou5 x) We’ve also taught where is something 邊度有 x?(bin1 dou6 jau5 x) Where is something ? 邊度有 x?(bin1 dou6 jau5 x) as in where is the supermarket. 邊度有(bin1 dou6 jau5) supermarket or where is the hospital 邊度有醫院?(bin1 dou6 jau5 ji1 jyun2) but while we can ask, we haven’t covered how to answer. So today, we will go over basic directions. First, we have go straight 一直行(jat1 zik6 haang4) go straight 一直行(jat1 zik6 haang4) Let’s break it down by syllable. 一直行(jat1 zik6 haang4) Now let’s hear it once again slowly 一 直 行(jat1 zik6 haang4), 一直行(jat1 zik6 haang4). Go straight. First we have 一直(jat1 zik6) which means all the way straight 一直(jat1 zik6) all the way straight. And it’s followed by 行(haang4) which means to walk 行(haang4) to walk. 一直行(jat1 zik6 haang4) Literally this means walk all the way straight. 一直行(jat1 zik6 haang4) go straight. Let’s look at the next expression to help us turn. Let’s cover turn right 轉右(zyun3 jau6), turn right 轉右(zyun3 jau6). Let’s break it down by syllable 轉 右(zyun3 jau6). Now let’s hear it once again 轉右(zyun3 jau6). To turn right. The first word 轉(zyun3) means to turn, 轉(zyun3) to turn. We follow this with 右( jau6) right 右(jau6) right. So altogether we have 轉右(zyun3 jau6) to turn right, 轉右(zyun3 jau6) to turn right. Now let’s work on turn left 轉左(zyun3 zo2), turn left 轉左(zyun3 zo2). Let’s break down this word and hear it once more 轉左(zyun3 zo2), 轉 左(zyun3 zo2), 轉左(zyun3 zo2) to turn left. Okay let’s try combining this altogether. How would you say, go straight ahead and turn right. That’s right 一直行 轉右(jat1 zik6 haang4 zyun3 jau6), go straight ahead and turn right 一直行 轉右(jat1 zik6 haang4 zyun3 jau6). Now how about go straight ahead and turn left 一直行 轉左(jat1 zik6 haang4 zyun3 zo2). Go straight ahead and turn left 一直行 轉左(jat1 zik6 haang4 zyun3 zo2). let’s try something more difficult. Turn left at a traffic light 紅綠燈轉左(hung4 luk6 dang1 zyun3 zo2). Turn left at a traffic light 紅綠燈轉左(hung4 luk6 dang1 zyun3 zo2). First we have 紅綠燈(hung4 luk6 dang1) traffic light 紅綠燈(hung4 luk6 dang1) traffic light. It literally means the red and green light. So it means traffic light 紅綠燈(hung4 luk6 dang1) traffic light. It’s followed by turn left 轉左(zyun3 zo2) turn left轉左(zyun3 zo2). Altogether we have 紅綠燈轉左(hung4 luk6 dang1 zyun3 zo2) turn left at a traffic light. Now how about turn right at a traffic light. That’s right 紅綠燈轉右(hung4 luk6 dang1 zyun3 jau6), turn right at a traffic light 紅綠燈轉右(hung4 luk6 dang1 zyun3 jau6). Let’s say you are almost there. Then you might want to say it’s on the right 喺右邊(hai2 jau6 bin1). It’s on the right 喺右邊(hai2 jau6 bin1). That’s literally 喺(hai2) it’s 右(jau6) right 邊(bin1) side, 喺右邊(hai2 jau6 bin1) it’s on the right, 喺右邊(hai2 jau6 bin1) it’s on the right. Now what about it’s on the left 喺左邊(hai2 zo2 bin1), it’s on the left 喺左邊(hai2 zo2 bin1). 右(jau6) is right, 左(zo2) is left.
So that’s it for today. Are you ready for our regular test? I will give you the English and you give me the Cantonese. Go straight 一直行(jat1 zik6 haang4), turn right 轉右(zyun3 jau6), turn left 轉左(zyun3 zo2), turn right at the light 紅綠燈轉右(hung4 luk6 dang1 zyun3 jau6). It’s on the right 喺右邊(hai2 jau6 bin1). It’s on the left 喺左邊(hai2 zo2 bin1). All right, that’s about does it for today. Remember to stop by cantoneseclass101.com and pick up the accompanying PDF.
