Survival Phrases, lesson 26. Riding the Rails, Part 2. In the previous lesson, we taught you how to use the subway. In Hong Kong or other parts in the Cantonese world, they have a great train systems too. It’s great for seeing things at the local level and also traveling long distance. To get started, you need to buy a train ticket 火車飛(fo2 ce1 fei1). This is how you say train ticket 火車飛(fo2 ce1 fei1), train ticket 火車飛(fo2 ce1 fei1). In the previous lesson, we learned subway ticket 地鐵飛(dei6 tit3 fei1), subway ticket 地鐵飛(dei6 tit3 fei1). Notice how close this sound 火車飛(fo2 ce1 fei1) and 地鐵飛(dei6 tit3 fei1) train ticket and subway ticket. Now just replace 地鐵(dei6 tit3) or subway with 火車(fo2 ce1) or train. Now what if you want to know how much the ticket is. Just ask how much is the ticket to 尖沙咀(zim1 saa1 zeoi2), 一張飛去尖沙咀幾錢?(jat1 zoeng1 fei1 heoi3 zim1 saa1 zeoi2 gei2 cin2?). Let’s hear that again slowly 一 張 飛去 尖 沙 咀 幾 錢?(jat1 zoeng1 fei1 heoi3 zim1 saa1 zeoi2 gei2 cin2?). How much is a ticket to 尖沙咀(zim1 saa1 zeoi2), 一張飛去尖沙咀幾錢?(jat1 zoeng1 fei1 heoi3 zim1 saa1 zeoi2 gei2 cin2?). It’s literally a ticket to 尖沙咀(zim1 saa1 zeoi2) how much. The sentence is very easy. We have 一張飛(jat1 zoeng1 fei1) which is one ticket followed by 去(heoi3) to and then the destination 尖沙咀(zim1 saa1 zeoi2). Now let’s hear the whole sentence again. How much is the ticket to 尖沙咀(zim1 saa1 zeoi2), 一張飛去尖沙咀幾錢?(jat1 zoeng1 fei1 heoi3 zim1 saa1 zeoi2 gei2 cin2?) Now if you want to go somewhere else, just swap in the destination. How much is the ticket to 紅磡(hung4 ham3), 一張飛去紅磡幾錢?(jat1 zoeng1 fei1 heoi3 hung4 ham3 gei2 cin2?). Let’s hear it again 一張飛去紅磡幾錢?(jat1 zoeng1 fei1 heoi3 hung4 ham3 gei2 cin2?) or how much is the ticket to central 一張飛去中環幾錢?(jat1 zoeng1 fei1 heoi3 zung1 waan4 gei2 cin2?). Let’s hear it again 一張飛去中環幾錢?(jat1 zoeng1 fei1 heoi3 zung1 waan4 gei2 cin2?). Now let’s hear the whole sentence again 一張飛去尖沙咀幾錢?(jat1 zoeng1 fei1 heoi3 zim1 saa1 zeoi2 gei2 cin2?). That’s how much is the ticket to 尖沙咀(zim1 saa1 zeoi2). You can also say 一張飛去尖沙咀幾多錢?(jat1 zoeng1 fei1 heoi3 zim1 saa1 zeoi2 gei2 do1 cin2?) Can you hear the extra word in there? 一張飛去尖沙咀幾多錢?(jat1 zoeng1 fei1 heoi3 zim1 saa1 zeoi2 gei2 do1 cin2?) That’s right. You can say 幾錢?(gei2 cin2) or 幾多錢?(gei2 do1 cin2?) when you want to ask how much. We’ve covered this before. Let’s now imagine that you are not traveling on your own but with someone else. So you need to ask for two or more tickets. Two tickets to 尖沙咀(zim1 saa1 zeoi2) is 兩張飛去尖沙咀(loeng3 zoeng1 fei1 heoi3 zim1 saa1 zeoi2). Now let’s hear it again slowly 兩 張 飛 去 尖沙 咀(loeng3 zoeng1 fei1 heoi3 zim1 saa1 zeoi2). This is really easy 兩張飛去尖沙咀(loeng3 zoeng1 fei1 heoi3 zim1 saa1 zeoi2). 一張飛(jat1 zoeng1 fei1) means one ticket. 兩張飛(loeng3 zoeng1 fei1) means two tickets. One ticket 一張飛(jat1 zoeng1 fei1) two tickets 兩張飛(loeng3 zoeng1 fei1). Let’s try putting this in a sentence. How do you ask for two tickets to 尖沙咀(zim1 saa1 zeoi2), 兩張飛去尖沙咀(loeng3 zoeng1 fei1 heoi3 zim1 saa1 zeoi2). Two tickets to 尖沙咀(zim1 saa1 zeoi2) is 兩張飛去尖沙咀(loeng3 zoeng1 fei1 heoi3 zim1 saa1 zeoi2). And that’s it for today’s lesson. Today we’ve learned how to say subway ticket 地鐵飛(dei6 tit3 fei1), train ticket 火車飛(fo2 ce1 fei1), how much is the ticket, how much 幾錢?(gei2 cin2) or 幾多錢?(gei2 do1 cin2?), one ticket 一張飛(jat1 zoeng1 fei1) , two tickets 兩張飛(loeng3 zoeng1 fei1) and you can make simple sentences too. All right, to close our today’s lesson, we’d like you to practice what you’ve just learned. I will give you the English and you give us the Cantonese. So 加 油(gaa1 jau2)! That’s good luck in Cantonese.
All right, the first one, subway ticket 地鐵飛(dei6 tit3 fei1), train ticket 火車飛(fo2 ce1 fei1). How much is the ticket to 尖沙咀(zim1 saa1 zeoi2)? 一張飛去尖沙咀幾錢?(jat1 zoeng1 fei1 heoi3 zim1 saa1 zeoi2 gei2 cin2?) or 一張飛去尖沙咀幾多錢?(jat1 zoeng1 fei1 heoi3 zim1 saa1 zeoi2 gei2 do1 cin2?). One ticket 一張飛(jat1 zoeng1 fei1), two tickets 兩張飛(loeng3 zoeng1 fei1) All right, that about does it for today.
