Lesson Transcript

Hi, everybody!
Do you know how to say “Bye” in Cantonese? In this lesson, you'll learn three parting expressions in Cantonese.
Let’s start with the easiest one.
[slowly] 再見
This means "Goodbye" in Cantonese. You can use this in formal situations.
再見 (zoi3 gin3) is a greeting suitable for any occasion. It literally means "again see." Both of the syllables, zoi3 and gin3, are mid, flat tones. This greeting is also perfect for formal occasions.
If you want to be more casual, there is a different phrase you should use.
[slowly] 再見喇
This means "Goodbye" in Cantonese.
This expression is used commonly among close friends because it's not formal. Make sure to use it only with close friends.
If you know you are going to see the person again, here's a phrase for you.
[slowly] 遲啲見
This means "See you later" in Cantonese.
The direct translation is "later see." 遲 (ci4) is a low tone and means "later," while 啲 is the Cantonese version of "-er" in English. 見 (gin3) is the infinitive "to see."
Let's wrap up this lesson by recapping what you've learned. Listen to the words and repeat after me.
