Echo: And we are here today with lower intermediate, season 1, Lesson 17. Are You Traveling to China?
Oscar: 最近 有冇打算去旅遊呀? (zeoi3 gan6 jau5 mou5 daa2 syun3 heoi3 leoi5 jau4 aa3?)
Echo: I don’t have any plans to travel but a lot of people in Hong Kong will travel to relax like the two friends in this dialogue.
Oscar: 發生喺兩個好朋友身上嘅事. (faat3 sang1 hai2 loeng5 go3 hou2 pang4 jau5 san1 soeng6 ge3 si6.)
Echo: Yes. They are talking about how to spend an upcoming holiday and they are speaking casual Cantonese as always.
Oscar: 咁我哋而家馬上去聽下啦! (gam2 ngo5 dei6 ji4 gaa1 maa5 soeng6 heoi3 teng1 haa5 laa1!)

Echo: Soon. This is a regular adverb which we put before our verb as in the sentence, I soon I am going to Hong Kong on the holiday.

Echo: I am going on vacation to Hong Kong soon.

Echo: Now if you travel to Hong Kong, one of the first things you notice is that everyone in Hong Kong works really hard.

Echo: And that’s our next word, to relax.

Echo: And there are lots of ways to relax in Hong Kong. One of the most popular is yoga.

Echo: If it’s sunny though, one of the nice things you can do in Hong Kong is go to the beach.

Echo: Soon. We can also say

Echo: So you can either say

Echo: Or

Echo: These are all pretty easy. So let’s look at some other ways to say the same thing.
Oscar: 冇錯, 我哋亦都可以話 即刻. (mou5 co3 , ngo5 dei6 jik6 dou1 ho2 ji5 waa6 zik1 hak1.)
Echo: Right away.
Oscar: 即刻. (zik1 hak1.)
Echo: Right away.
Oscar: 你最好 即刻打電話比你爸爸. (nei5 zeoi3 hou2 zik1 hak1 daa2 din6 waa2 bei2 nei5 baa4 baa1.)
Echo: You better call your dad right away.
Oscar: 而即刻 只不過係口語, 如書面語呢 就應該係 馬上. (ji4 zik1 hak1 zi2 bat1 gwo3 hai6 hau2 jyu5 , jyu4 syu1 min6 jyu5 ne1 zau6 jing1 goi1 hai6 maa5 soeng6.)
Echo: So
Oscar: 即刻. (zik1 hak1.)
Echo: Is very colloquial. In written Cantonese, people are more likely to say
Oscar: 馬上. (maa5 soeng6.)
Echo: Right away.
Oscar: 馬上. (maa5 soeng6.)
Echo: Right away.
Oscar: 我 馬上要去日本渡假喇! (ngo5 maa5 soeng6 jiu3 heoi3 jat6 bun2 dou6 gaa3 laa3!)
Echo: I am going to Japan on holiday right away.
Oscar: 香港嘅潮濕天氣 馬上要到喇! (hoeng1 gong2 ge3 ciu4 sap1 tin1 hei3 maa5 soeng6 jiu3 dou3 laa3!)
Echo: It will be the wet season in Hong Kong right away. So these are two ways of saying right away.
Oscar: 即刻. (zik1 hak1.)
Echo: And
Oscar: 馬上. (maa5 soeng6.)
Echo: The first is colloquial. The second is a bit more formal.
Oscar: 而家再教多你哋一個 -- 好快. (ji4 gaa1 zoi3 gaau3 do1 nei5 dei6 jat1 go3, hou2 faai3.)
Echo: This means very soon.
Oscar: 好快. (hou2 faai3.)
Echo: Very soon.
Oscar: 我哋 好快就要去海灘. (ngo5 dei6 hou2 faai3 zau6 jiu3 heoi3 hoi2 taan1.)
Echo: We are going to the beach very soon.
Oscar: 我哋 好快就要去海灘. (ngo5 dei6 hou2 faai3 zau6 jiu3 heoi3 hoi2 taan1.)
