Echo: Okay moving on, what’s next?
Oscar: 唔,另一種好受歡迎嘅茶就應該係普洱茶 (m4 ,ling6 jat1 zung2 hou2 sau6 fun1 jing4 ge3 caa4 zau6 jing1 goi1 hai6 pou2 lei5 caa4.)

Echo: But we are not really talking about having something.
Oscar: 今日要講嘅 係一種新嘅用法 (gam1 jat6 jiu3 gong2 ge3 hai6 jat1 zung2 san1 ge3 jung6 faat3.)

Hi John,

Thanks for your question.

Your understanding is correct. 專家 (zyun1 gaa1) ~ expert.

In our dialogue, 我好有研究 (ngo5 hou2 jau5 jin4 gau3) ~ I'm an expert, is not a word-for-word translation. 研究 (jin4 gau3) means "research/study", so when I say 好有研究 (hou2 jau5 jin4 gau3) ~ do a lot of research, it implies "I understand a lot and I am an expert". 😉

Hi

In the lesson dialog Mut6 lei6, wu1 lung4... ngo5 hou2 jau5 jin4 gau3

It translates 研究 jin4 gau3 as Expert but in you vocab list we see 專家 zyun1 gaa1 as 'Expert'

Can you please help explain this?

Thanks

Hello Vincent,

方面 (fong1 min6)~ aspect

So I think your explanation, "He is an expert regarding the aspects of tea leaves?" is correct. 👍

我老豆係拆彈專家。

ngo5 lou5 dau6 hai6 caak3 daan2 zyun1 gaa1.

My dad is a bomb disposal expert.

拆彈(caak3 daan2) ~ dismantle the bomb

拆(caaks) ~ dismantle, to take a machine or something complicated apart, usually to make it unable to work.

彈(daan2)~ bomb

老豆(lou4 dau6) ~ father. It is a colloquial expression. The formal one is 父親(fu6 can1).

成本(sing4 bun2) ~ manufacturing cost

成 sing4 - succeed, achieve

本 bun2 - cost, capital

In the first vocabulary sentence for "zyun1 gaa1: expert" (佢係關於茶葉方面嘅專家。keoi5 hai6 gwaan1 jyu1 caa4 jip6 ge3 zyun1 gaa1. He is an expert on tea."), there is no Jyutping nor English translation provided for 方面, although it is phonetically heard in the audio (as "fong1 min6"). Does 方面 (fong1 min6) mean "aspects" and does "jip6"葉 mean leaves, so would a more accurate translation be "He is an expert regarding the aspects of tea leaves?"

In 專家(zyun1 gaa1)' s second vocabulary sentence ("ngo5 lou5 dau6 hai6 caak3 daan2 zyun1 gaa1. My dad is a bomb disposal expert."), what is the individual meaning of "caak3" 拆 and "daan2"彈 separately, and is "lou5 dau6"老豆 a formal, written Cantonese word/phrase for "dad" (as I don't see it in the on-line dictionary)?

In a previous question about the vocabulary sentence for "jin4 gau3: research" (" si1 jan4 jin4 gau3 ge3 sing4 bun2 hou2 gou1.Private research is very costly.), it was explained that "成本(sing4 bun2)~ The manufacturing cost." Can you clarify whether "sing4"成 itself means "manufacturing" or "cost" and likewise for "bun2"本 (since the order of words in Cantonese does not necessarily correspond to the English word order)? (I apologize, but the on-line dictionary has other definitions for "sing4"成" and "bun2"本, but none as "manufacturing" or "cost.")

Hello Penny lawton,

Thank you for your question.

You are right that the word 有(jau5) means " to have" in this case. 👍👍

佢阿媽早有懷疑。

keoi5 aa3 maa1 zou2 jau5 waai4 ji4.

"His mom has been skeptical for quite a long time."

佢(keoi5)~ his

阿媽(aa3 maa1)~ mother

早(zou2)~earlier, before

有(jau5)~ have

懷疑(waai4 ji4)~ doubt, suspect

Keoi5 aa3 maa1 zou2jau5 waai4 ji4 his mother has been skeptical for quite a long time

Please can you break this sentence down for me I think the jau5 in this case means to have rather than to be m4 goi Lo taai
