Lesson focus

Oscar: It’s grammar time.
Echo: Okay Echo what is today’s grammar point?
Oscar: 今日嘅語法係 呢個詞組, 「係乜乜乜嘅」 。(gam1 jat6 ge3 jyu5 faat3 hai6 ni1 go3 ci4 zou2 - “hai6 mat1 mat1 mat1 ge3”.)
Echo: Right. We see it in the dialogue here.
Oscar: 我係想存錢嘅 。( ngo5 hai6 soeng2 cyun4 cin2 ge3.)
Echo: I want to save some money.
Oscar: 我係想存錢嘅 。( ngo5 hai6 soeng2 cyun4 cin2 ge3.)
Echo: I want to save some money.
Oscar: 「係乜乜乜嘅」係用嚟強調呢個句子嘅 。(“hai6 mat1 mat1 mat1 ge3” hai6 jung6 lai4 koeng4 diu6 ni1 go3 geoi3 zi2 ge3.)
Echo: Right. This adds extra emphasis to the sentence.
Oscar: 我係想存錢嘅 。(ngo5 hai6 soeng2 cyun4 cin2 ge3.)
Echo: We translated this as I want to save some money but it really means something like the reason I come here is to save money.
Oscar: 我係想存錢嘅 。(ngo5 hai6 soeng2 cyun4 cin2 ge3.)
Echo: Let’s practice in some more examples.
Oscar: 我係嚟開儲蓄戶口嘅 。(ngo5 hai6 lai4 hoi1 cyu5 cuk1 wu6 hau2 ge3.)
Echo: I am here to open a saving account.
Oscar: 我係嚟開儲蓄戶口嘅 。(ngo5 hai6 lai4 hoi1 cyu5 cuk1 wu6 hau2 ge3.)
Echo: I am here to open a savings account.
Oscar: 開支票戶口係免費嘅 。(hoi1 zi1 piu3 wu6 hau2 hai6 min5 fai3 ge3.)
Echo: Opening a checking account is free.
Oscar: 開支票戶口係免費嘅 。(hoi1 zi1 piu3 wu6 hau2 hai6 min5 fai3 ge3.)
Echo: Opening a checking account is free.
Oscar: 我哋可以睇到呢個結構其實好容易用。(ngo5 dei6 ho2 ji5 tai2 dou3 ni1 go3 git3 kau3 kei4 sat6 hou2 jung4 ji6 jung6.)
Echo: Right. We can use this in negative sentences too.
Oscar: 冇錯,例如我唔係嚟開信用咭嘅。(mou5 co3, lai6 jyu4 ngo5 m4 hai6 lai4 hoi1 seon3 jung6 kaat1 ge3.)
Echo: I didn’t come to apply for a credit card.
Oscar: 我唔係嚟開信用咭嘅。(ngo5 m4 hai6 lai4 hoi1 seon3 jung6 kaat1 ge3.)
Echo: I didn’t come to apply for a credit card.
Oscar: 或者, 依個銀行戶口唔係我嘅。(waak6 ze2 , ji1 go3 ngan4 hong4 wu6 hau2 m4 hai6 ngo5 ge3.)
Echo: This bank account isn’t mine.
Oscar: 依個銀行戶口唔係我嘅。(ji1 go3 ngan4 hong4 wu6 hau2 m4 hai6 ngo5 ge3.)
Echo: This bank account isn’t mine.
Oscar: 只需要將「唔」放喺「係」嘅前面就好喇!(zi2 seoi1 jiu3 zoeng3 “m4” fong3 hai2 “hai6” ge3 cin4 min6 zau6 hou2 laa3!)
Echo: Right but the main point is that we are really emphasizing this.
Oscar: 冇錯,我哋走之前 要提醒大家記得一件事。(mou5 co3, ngo5 dei6 zau2 zi1 cin4 jiu3 tai4 sing2 daai6 gaa1 gei3 dak1 jat1 gin6 si6.)

Outro

Echo: Right. If you have any questions, don’t forget.
Oscar: 喺我哋個網站上面留言。(hai2 ngo5 dei6 go3 mong5 zaam6 soeng6 min6 lau4 jin4.)

This Lesson's Honzi is missing the literal translations for key vocabulary words, which I assume (from the many questions in the Comments section) has added to the confusion about some of the vocabulary. What does "cuk1" 蓄 literally mean as part of the vocabulary word "儲蓄 cyu5 cuk1: to save?" "cuk1"蓄 does not appear in the on-line dictionary by itself to clarify its individual meaning, so when it's paired up with "cyu5" which, already means to save," it leaves us wondering what special or added meaning "cuk1"蓄 has? Because the Honzi is missing all the literal translations for these vocabulary words, what is the literal meaning of "zi1"支, "piu3"票 (together "cheque: check"), "wu6"戶, "hau2"口 (together "account"),"min5",免 "fai3"費 (together "free"), and "fun1"歡 "jing4"迎 (together "to welcome")

In the vocabulary sentence for "wu6 hau2: account" ("ngo5 soeng2 hoi1 jat1 go3 gu2 piu3 maai5 maai6 wu6 hau2, jau5 di1 me1 sau2 zuk6? I want to open a stock trading account, what are the procedures?"), what does "gu2"股 and "piu3"票 mean individually, and together if they form a word together, and what does "maai5 maai6"買賣 mean there? Thank you, again, for your very helpful responses!

Hello lo taai,

Thank you for your question.

Literally your translation is perfectly right!?

{not each one the country also accepts travellers cheques}

唔係每一個國家都接受旅遊支票。( m4 hai6 mui5 jat1 go3 gwok3 gaa1 dou1 zip3 sau6 leoi5 jau4 zi1 piu3.)

The following sentence is correct except the tone of 唔係(m4 hai4) should be 唔係(m4 hai6). Very good job! ?

唔係每一個人都感冒。(m4 hai6 mui5 jat1 go3 jan4 dou1 gam2 mou6) ~ not every one has a cold

So glad to see your great improvement! ?

Hello Karen,

Thank you for your question.

存 (cyun4) has several meanings. It means "exist, stock, store or deposit". For example:

存在 (cyun4 zoi6)~exist

存貨(cyun4 fo3)~inventory

存款(cyun4 fun2)~to deposit money in a bank

儲存(cyu5 cyun4)~to store, to stock, to save = 儲蓄(cyu5 cuk1)~save

Sometimes you may hear people say 我要存錢入銀行(cyun4 cin2 jap6 ngan4 hong4)~I want to deposit money to the bank and that includes the meaning "deposit first and keep it in the bank".

Feel free to send us any other questions.

存錢 cyun4 cin2 - are you sure this means save money or just deposit money? I can't read Chinese characters, so the previous post with the same question doesn't make full sense to me.

Hello 朴蓮,

如果你三十歲連一啲儲蓄都冇,你真係要慳啲洗。

(jyu4 gwo2 nei5 saam1 sap6 seoi3 lin4 jat1 di1 cyu5 cuk1 dou1 mou5, nei5 zan1 hai6 jiu3 haan1 di1 sai2).

If you don't have any savings by age 30, you should spend less.

The 洗(sai2) in the sample sentence of the Lesson Notes PDF means "to spend".

慳(hann1) means "save or limit". So 慳啲洗(haan1 di1 sai2) means " to save or limit the spending". In mandarin is 省點錢。

In the Line-by -line Audio:

好啊,我就開呢隻。(hou2 aa3, ngo5 zau6 hoi1 ni1 zek3).

Okay, I could use that too.

就(zau6) means "just like that". It has the meaning of "exactly". The bank clerk told her that the checking account would provide the free credit card. Then she decided to take the one exactly like the clerk suggested which is the checking account with the free credit card offer. 就(zau6) is the short form of 就係(zau6 hai6)~ exactly. After hearing the good deal offer of giving away free credit card, she wants to say this is exactly what she would like to have. 對! 我就是可以用這個. Okay, I could use that too. 好啊,我就開呢隻。(hou2 aa3, ngo5 zau6 hoi1 ni1 zek3)

还有,“好啊,我就開呢隻。”的英文翻译是"Okay, I could use that too." 但我不明白 “我就開呢隻”当中那个字有 too的意思。我还以为她最后选择了支票户口呢:open_mouth:
