Nei5 ho2, ngo5 hai6 Olivia. Hi everybody! I’m Olivia.
Welcome to CantoneseClass101.com’s “saam1 fan1 zung1 gwong2 dung1 waa2”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Cantonese.
In the last two lessons we learned how to go shopping. Did you practice at home?
In this lesson, we're going to learn other useful tips to talk about your schedule - for example, if a friend asks you "What are you doing this weekend?"
Let’s start!
To ask someone "What are you doing this weekend?", you say:
gaam1 go3 lai5 baai6 luk6 jat6 jau5 me1 zou6 aa6?
[slowly] gaam1 go3 lai5 baai6 luk6 jat6 jau5 me1 zou6 aa6?
Let’s break it down.
gaam1 go3 → is "this”
lai5 baai6 luk6 jat6 → is "saturday and sunday".
Literally, “the Saturday and Sunday of this week”
Since it is common to use English words in Cantonese, you can also say gaam1 go3 weekend, which is much easier.
Then jau5 me1 zou6 aa6? → means "anything to do?”
Let’s break it down.
jau5 is “to have”
me1 is “what”
zou6 is “to do”
aa6 is a question particle
altogether we have jau5 me1 zou6 aa6?
[slowly] jau5 me1 zou6 aa6?
What if you’re not asking about this weekend?
Asking about a different time period is as easy as replacing gam1 go3 lai5 baai6 luk6 jat6.
Tomorrow is ting1 jat6. So you can also say ting1 jat6 jau5 me1 zou6 aa6? “What are you doing tomorrow?”
Or, ou could also put in any weekday, like lai5 baai6 jat1 "Monday" or lai5 baai6 ng5, which is "Friday".
lai5 baai6 jat1 jau5 me1 zou6 aa6?
lai5 baai6 ng5 jau5 me1 zou6 aa6?
So now, if someone asks *you* ting1 jat6 jau5 me1 zou6 aa6? or "What are you doing tomorrow?", how can you answer?
Here's an example: ngo5 heoi3 gung1 jyun2. "I'm going to the park."
ngo5 heoi3 means "I go", and gung1 jyun2 means "park". Feel free to replace "park" with any other location!
Now it’s time for Olivia’s Insights.
The phrase jau5 me1 zou6 aa6?, also means "is there anything to do?”
So next time when you’re bored and looking for something to do, try asking your friends:
jau5 me1 zou6 aa6?
In this lesson we learned how to talk about your schedule. Next time we are going to learn how to use the verb hai6 "to be". We'll also talk about how to tell people your nationality.
I'll be waiting for you in the next “saam1 fan1 zung1 gwong2 dung1 waa2”.
Haa6 ci3 gin3!

Hello Felipe dall'Ava,

Thank you for your question.

I would say people absolutely can understand you even you say 依個禮拜六日 instead of 今個禮拜六日 and 呢個禮拜六日.

But using 今個禮拜六日 and 呢個禮拜六日 are more common.

Hello!

You told Stephen that the forms 今個禮拜六日 and 呢個禮拜六日 are interchangeable.

Is 依個禮拜六日 also interchangeable between these other two forms?

I am asking you that, because we learned 依個 as "this" on lesson 8 (How much?), just as we also learned 今個 as "this" (on this lesson).

Thank you for all your attention!

Hi Stephen,

今個禮拜六日 and 呢個禮拜六日 are interchangeable.

In HK most people just say the English "weekend" for weekend; while; in written text it is 週末 (zau1 mut6).

Oops you're right, the tones 禮拜 are 5 3. We'll edit it asap.

Cheers,

Olivia

Oh and also, isn't 礼拜 supposed to be tones 5 3?

Good explanations, just wondering, what's the difference between saying 今个礼拜六日 and 呢个礼拜六日,and also, does Cantonese not have a specific word for weekend?
