David: Right. You will hear that a lot when you disagree with people.
Melody: 唔,冇錯。(m4 ,mou5 co3 。)
David: So you should listen to other people’s opinions. Don’t be so stubborn.

David: Yeah. The umbrella is more popular, far more popular. Moving up, next we have the word for Shawl.
Melody: 披肩。(pei1 gin1 。)

David: Right and that goes over the head. If it doesn’t go over the head, it’s just a scarf.
Melody: 圍巾。(wai4 gan1 。)
David: Scarf.
Melody: 圍巾, 所以今日呢全部詞語都係同日常生活有關, 所以一定要記住, 頸, 膊頭,
硬頸, 斗篷 , 披肩, 圍巾。(wai4 gan1 , so2 ji5 gam1 jat6 ne1 cyun4 bou6 ci4 jyu5 dou1 hai6 tung4 jat6 soeng4 sang1 wut6 jau5 gwaan1 , so2 ji5 jat1 ding6 jiu3 gei3 zyu6 , geng2 , bok3 tau4 , ngaang6 geng2 , dau2 pung4 , pei1 gin1 , wai4 gan1 。)
David: Right. And with that, let’s move on to our grammar point.

Lesson focus

David: Okay Melody, what’s our grammar point today?
David: What’s that hanging on your neck?
Melody: 你條頸。(nei5 tiu4 geng2 。)
David: Right. That little bit there means your neck.
Melody: 你條頸。(nei5 tiu4 geng2 。)
David: So this is something we’ve mentioned before but it’s really, really important. So we wanted to review it in this lesson and that’s how to make possessive phrases with measure words in Cantonese.
Melody: 係呀!你講得啱。(hai6 aa3 !nei5 gong2 dak1 ngaam1 。)
David: In Cantonese, when we make a phrase possessive, we want to use a measure word.
Melody: 你條頸。(nei5 tiu4 geng2 。)
David: You measure word neck.
Melody: 你條頸, 我哋將個 條 呢個量詞加喺 頸 前面, 我哋唔會話 你頸, 咁樣係唔啱嘅。(nei5 tiu4 geng2 , ngo5 dei6 zoeng1 go3 tiu4 ni1 go3 loeng6 ci4 gaa1 hai2 geng2 cin4 min6 , ngo5 dei6 m4 wui2 waa6 nei5 geng2 , gam2 joeng2 hai6 m4 ngaam1 ge3 。)
David: Right. You can’t say that you’ve got to have that measure word there.
Melody: 冇錯。(mou5 co3 。)
David: One more time.
Melody: 你條頸。(nei5 tiu4 geng2 。)
David: And we see this with all kinds of things. For instance, my hands.
Melody: 我對手。(ngo5 deoi3 sau2 。)
David: My hands.
Melody: 我對手。(ngo5 deoi3 sau2 。)
David: His pants.
Melody: 佢條褲。(keoi5 tiu4 fu3 。)
David: His pants.
Melody: 佢條褲。(keoi5 tiu4 fu3 。)
David: Her poncho.
Melody: 佢件斗篷。(keoi5 gin6 dau2 pung4 。)
David: Or for a simpler example, your table.
Melody: 你張枱。(nei5 zoeng1 toi2 。)
David: Your table.
Melody: 你張枱。 其實我哋亦都可以話 我嘅手, 佢嘅褲, 佢嘅斗篷, 你嘅枱, 但係其實咁講會有少少奇怪。(nei5 zoeng1 toi2 。 kei4 sat6 ngo5 dei6 jik6 dou1 ho2 ji5 waa6 ngo5 ge3 sau2 , keoi5 ge3 fu3 , keoi5 ge3 dau2 pung4 , nei5 ge3 toi2 , daan6 hai6 kei4 sat6 gam2 gong2 wui2 jau5 siu2 siu2 kei4 gwaai3 。)
David: Right. Yeah but that’s not the most native way for Cantonese speakers to speak. The most native way is to use these measure words.
Melody: 冇錯, 我再重複一遍, 我對手, 佢條褲, 佢件斗篷, 你張枱。(mou5 co3 , ngo5 zoi3 cung4 fuk1 jat1 pin3 , ngo5 deoi3 sau2 , keoi5 tiu4 fu3 , keoi5 gin6 dau2 pung4 , nei5 zoeng1 toi2 。)
David: Right and this is review but it’s very, very important. So keep it in mind.
Melody: 冇錯,所以我哋要記得喺名詞前面加一個量詞,譬如話 對,條,件, 呢啲都係量詞。(mou5 co3 , so2 ji5 ngo5 dei6 jiu3 gei3 dak1 hai2 ming4 ci4 cin4 min6 gaa1 jat1 go3 loeng6 ci4 , pei3 jyu4 waa6 deoi3 ,tiu4 ,gin6 , ni1 di1 dou1 hai6 loeng6 ci4 。)

Outro

David: Right. So if you want to sound native, make sure you are using the measure words specific to the words and with that, that’s the end of our lesson for today. I am David.
Melody: 我係 Melody。 (ngo5 hai6 Melody 。 )
David: And we will see you on the site.
Melody: 希望下次再見。 Bye bye.(hei1 mong6 haa6 ci3 zoi3 gin3 。 Bye bye .)
