POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Melody: 唉!有陣時呢我覺得女仔真係好麻煩呀!對話入面呢個男仔真係陪佢陪到煩晒啦!(aai1 !jau5 zan6 si4 ne1 ngo5 gok3 dak1 neoi5 zai2 zan1 hai6 hou2 maa4 faan4 aa3 !deoi3 waa6 jap6 min6 ni1 go3 naam4 zai2 zan1 hai6 pui4 keoi5 pui4 dou3 faan4 saai3 laa3 !)
David: Right. This is actually why I make it a point never to go shopping with people who like shopping whether they are women or they are men. It’s too much hassle for me.
Melody: 係呀!呢個係一個好好嘅選擇, 因為女人呢 shopping 真係好恐怖㗎!(hai6 aa3 !ni1 go3 hai6 jat1 go3 hou2 hou2 ge3 syun2 zaak6 , jan1 wai6 neoi5 jan2 ne1 shopping zan1 hai6 hou2 hung2 bou3 gaa3 !)
VOCAB LIST
David: Maybe. Anyway our vocabulary today is all about shopping and sharing opinions. So let’s get to it.
Melody: 商場。(soeng1 coeng4。)
David: Shopping mall.
Melody: 商 場, 商場, 行街。(soeng1 coeng4, soeng1 coeng4, haang4 gaai1。)
David: To go shopping.
Melody: 行 街, 行街, 買嘢。(hang4 gaai1, haang4 gaai1, maai5 je5。)
David: To buy.
Melody: 買 嘢, 買嘢, 覺得。(maai5 je5, maai5 je5, gok6 dak1。)

David: To like.
Melody: 鍾 意, 鍾意, 意見。(zung1 ji3N, zung1 ji3, ji3 gin3。)
David: Opinion.
Melody: 意 見, 意見。(ji3 gin3, ji3 gin3。)
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
David: Let’s take a closer look at some of these words. Our first word is
Melody: 商場。( soeng1 coeng4 。)
David: Shopping mall.
Melody: 商場。(soeng1 coeng4 。)
David: Shopping mall.
Melody: 唔, 如果呢係單獨嘅一間或者係細啲嘅呢, 我哋通常會叫佢做商店, 或者係店舖。(m4 , jyu4 gwo2 ne1 hai6 daan1 duk6 ge3 jat1 gaan1 waak6 ze2 hai6 sai3 di1 ge3 ne1 , ngo5 dei6 tung1 soeng4 wui2 giu3 keoi5 zou6 soeng1 dim3 , waak6 ze2 hai6 dim3 pou3 。)
David: Right. Both of those are shops. So a shopping mall is
Melody: 商場。 (soeng1 coeng4 。)
David: And a smaller store is
Melody: 商店, 店舖。(soeng1 dim3 , dim3 pou3 。)
David: Right. So we could say that a shopping center has a lot of stores.
Melody: 商場入面有好多店舖。(soeng1 coeng4 jap6 min6 jau5 hou2 do1 dim3 pou3 。)
David: A shopping center has a lot of stores.
Melody: 商場入面有好多商店。(soeng1 coeng4 jap6 min6 jau5 hou2 do1 soeng1 dim3 。)
David: Right. We also have a verb in our lesson today which means to go shopping.
Melody: 行街。(haang4 gaai1 。)
David: To go shopping.
Melody: 行街。(haang4 gaai1 。)
David: This is literally to walk the streets.
Melody: 係呀!冇錯, 但係我哋香港人通常話行街, 就係去 shopping 嘅意思。(hai6 aa3 !mou5 co3 , daan6 hai6 ngo5 dei6 hoeng1 gong2 jan4 tung1 soeng4 waa6 haang4 gaai1 , zau6 hai6 heoi3 shopping ge3 ji3 si1 。)
David: Right. So it’s a phrase that means to go shopping.
Melody: 唔, 冇錯。(m4 , mou5 co3 。)
David: So even if you are in a mall, you are still going to
Melody: 行街, 但係通常呢我哋 行街 就要去買嘢。(haang4 gaai1 , daan6 hai6 tung1 soeng4 ne1 ngo5 dei6 haang4 gaai1 zau6 jiu3 heoi3 maai5 je5 。)
David: And that’s our next word.
Melody: 買嘢 。(maai5 je5 。)
David: It means to buy things.
Melody: 買嘢 。(maai5 je5 。)
David: Right and then generically you are buying different kinds of things.
Melody: 冇錯, 譬如話 買衫,買鞋,買禮物。(mou5 co3 , pei3 jyu4 waa6 maai5 saam1 ,maai5 haai4 ,maai5 lai5 mat6 。)
David: Right. So all of those are ways of
Melody: 買嘢。 (maai5 je5 。)
David: You are buying things.
Melody: 冇錯。(mou5 co3 。)
David: So if you say this, you are not specifying what it is that you are going to buy. Okay our next words focus on emotions and communicating opinions. For instance, we have the verb
Melody: 覺得。(gok3 dak1 。)
David: To feel.
Melody: 覺得。(gok3 dak1 。)
David: To feel.
Melody: 覺得, 譬如話 你覺得呢件衫好唔好呀?(gok3 dak1 , pei3 jyu4 waa6 nei5 gok3 dak1 ni1 gin6 saam1 hou2 m4 hou2 aa3 ?)
David: Do you feel that that piece of clothing is good?
Melody: 你覺得呢件衫好唔好呀?(nei5 gok3 dak1 ni1 gin6 saam1 hou2 m4 hou2 aa3 ?)
David: Yeah. How about do you feel the purple one is too old?
Melody: 你覺得紫色嗰件會唔會太老呀?( nei5 gok3 dak1 zi2 sik1 go2 gin6 wui2 m4 wui2 taai3 lou5 aa3 ?)
David: Do you feel the purple one is too old.
Melody: 你覺得紫色嗰件會唔會太老呀?(nei5 gok3 dak1 zi2 sik1 go2 gin6 wui2 m4 wui2 taai3 lou5 aa3 ?)
David: And if someone asks you for your opinion, you are going to need to give it to them. Melody, how do we say the word opinion?
Melody: 意見。(ji3 gin3 。)
David: Opinion.
Melody: 意見。(ji3 gin3 。)
David: You could say, I don’t have an opinion.
Melody: 我冇咩嘢意見。(ngo5 mou5 me1 je5 ji3 gin3 。)
David: Or I already gave you my opinion.
Melody: 我已經畀咗你我嘅意見。(ngo5 ji5 ging1 bei2 zo2 nei5 ngo5 ge3 ji3 gin3 。)
David: Right. So the word
Melody: 覺得。(gok3 dak1 。)
David: Is a verb whereas
Melody: 意見。(ji3 gin3 。)
David: Is a noun. And if you want to say giving an opinion, you have to put a verb explicitly in there.
Melody: 比我你嘅意見。(bei2 ngo5 nei5 ge3 ji3 gin3 。)
David: Give me your opinion.
Melody: 比我你嘅意見。(bei2 ngo5 nei5 ge3 ji3 gin3 。)
David: Great. And with that, let’s move on to our grammar point.

Lesson focus

David: In previous lessons, we learned how to ask simple questions in Cantonese.
Melody: 冇錯, 之前呢我哋教過簡單少少嘅問問題方式, 譬如話 有冇做完, 做未做完, 但係今日呢我哋會教你一個更加好用嘅方式去問。 (mou5 co3 , zi1 cin4 ne1 ngo5 dei6 gaau3 gwo3 gaan2 daan1 siu2 siu2 ge3 man6 man6 tai4 fong1 sik1 , pei3 jyu4 waa6 jau5 mou5 zou6 jyun4 , zou6 mei6 zou6 jyun4 , daan6 hai6 gam1 jat6 ne1 ngo5 dei6 wui2 gaau3 nei5 jat1 go3 gang3 gaa1 hou2 jung6 ge3 fong1 sik1 heoi3 man6 。)
David: Right. We are going to learn another way to ask questions about if something is finished. Now as Melody said before, previously we’ve learned to do this by putting kind of yes/no questions in front of the verbs. For instance,
Melody: 有冇做完? (jau5 mou5 zou6 jyun4 ?)
David: To have or to have not done/finished.
Melody: 有冇做完?(jau5 mou5 zou6 jyun4 ?)
David: Another way of asking the same question is
Melody: 做未做完? (zou6 mei6 zou6 jyun4 ?)
David: To do finish or not really.
Melody: 做未做完? (zou6 mei6 zou6 jyun4 ?)
David: In our lesson for today, we are looking at a more colloquial and advanced way to ask the same thing.
Melody: 冇錯。(mou5 co3 。)
David: We see this in our dialogue.
Melody: 我哋已經行咗幾個商場, 你行完未呀? (ngo5 dei6 ji5 ging1 haang4 zo2 gei2 go3 soeng1 coeng4 , nei5 haang4 jyun4 mei6 aa3 ?)
David: We’ve already been through a few malls. Are you done shopping?
Melody: 行完未呀?(haang4 jyun4 mei6 aa3 ?)
David: Are you done or not? Are you done or not?
Melody: 行完未呀? (haang4 jyun4 mei6 aa3 ?)
David: We see this with other verbs as well. For instance, have you finished doing?
Melody: 做完未呀?(zou6 jyun4 mei6 aa3 ?)
David: Have you finished doing?
Melody: 做完未呀?(zou6 jyun4 mei6 aa3 ?)
David: Have you finished looking?
Melody: 睇完未呀?(tai2 jyun4 mei6 aa3 ?)
David: Or have you finished watching?
Melody: 睇完未呀?(tai2 jyun4 mei6 aa3 ?)
David: Or maybe have you finished eating?
Melody: 食完未呀?食完未呀?(sik6 jyun4 mei6 aa3 ?sik6 jyun4 mei6 aa3 ?)
David: So the pattern here is obvious.
Melody: 我哋將 完未 放喺一個動詞後面嚟問問題。(ngo5 dei6 zoeng1 jyun4 mei6 fong3 hai2 jat1 go3 dung6 ci4 hau6 min6 lai4 man6 man6 tai4 。)
David: So the pattern is pretty simple. This is more advanced colloquial way to ask a question. To ask someone if they finished doing something.
Melody: 係。(hai6 。)
David: Let’s take a look at some sample sentences to see this in action.
Melody: 唔, 咁不如我比你幾個例子吖!譬如話今日要交嘅報告你做完未?(m4 , gam3 bat1 jyu4 ngo5 bei2 nei5 gei2 go3 lai6 zi2 aa1 !pei3 jyu4 waa6 gam1 jat6 jiu3 gaau1 ge3 bou3 gou3 nei5 zou6 jyun4 mei6 ?)
David: Have you finished the report you need to hand in today?
Melody: 今日要交嘅報告你做完未?(gam1 jat6 jiu3 gaau1 ge3 bou3 gou3 nei5 zou6 jyun4 mei6 ?)
David: Right. And first we have this phrase and then of the report that you need to hand in today. You to have finished it or not.
Melody: 你做完未呀?(nei5 zou6 jyun4 mei6 aa3 ?)
David: Have you finished it? Melody, how about another example?
Melody: 唔, 譬如你可能會問你個朋友, 呢個電視劇你睇完未呀?(m4 , pei3 jyu4 nei5 ho2 nang4 wui2 man6 nei5 go3 pang4 jau5 , ni1 go3 din6 si6 kek6 nei5 tai2 jyun4 mei6 aa3 ?)
David: Have you finished watching this TV series?
Melody: 呢個電視劇你睇完未呀?(ni1 go3 din6 si6 kek6 nei5 tai2 jyun4 mei6 aa3 ?)
David: This TV show, have you finished watching it?
Melody: 唔, 咁通常呢我哋回答, 咁通常呢我哋可以回答 睇完或者係未睇完。(m4 , gam2 tung1 soeng4 ne1 ngo5 dei6 wui4 daap3 , gam2 tung1 soeng4 ne1 ngo5 dei6 ho2 ji5 wui4 daap3 tai2 jyun4 waak6 ze2 hai6 mei6 tai2 jyun4 。)
David: Right. So you are going to answer, I finished watching it or I haven’t finished watching it. The key thing to remember though is that we are asking this question in a different way than we’ve taught you before. Let’s review.
Melody: 我哋將 完未 加喺一個動詞後面, 譬如 做完未呀?行完未?食完未?睇完未?(ngo5 dei6 zoeng1 jyun4 mei6 gaa1 hai2 jat1 go3 dung6 ci4 hau6 min6 , pei3 jyu4 zou6 jyun4 mei6 aa3 ?haang4 jyun4 mei6 ?sik6 jyun4 mei6 ?tai2 jyun4 mei6 ?)

Outro

David: Right. It’s a different way of asking questions that’s a bit more advanced than what we’ve learned today. For now though, that’s all the time we have in our show. As always, if you do not yet have a free account with us, Melody what should you do?
Melody: 登錄我地既網站,然之後註冊一個帳戶。(dang1 luk6 ngo5 dei6 gei3 mong5 zaam6 ,jin4 zi1 hau6 zyu3 caak3 jat1 go3 zoeng3 wu6 。)
David: You can register in 5 seconds and all you need is an email address, any email address will do. For now though, that is all the time we have. Thanks for listening. I am David.
Melody: 我係 Melody, 希望下次再見。(ngo5 hai6 Melody , hei1 mong6 haa6 ci3 zoi3 gin3 。)
