A: Why do you think the rates are so low? Just take it as environmentally friendly!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Melody: Okay 所以呢個對話呢佢係驗證咗便宜冇好貨呢句話, 你覺得呢?(Okay , so2 ji5 ni1 go3 deoi3 waa6 ne1 keoi5 hai6 jim6 zing3 zo2 pin4 ji4 mou5 hou2 fo3 ni1 geoi3 waa6 , nei5 gok3 dak1 ne1 ?)
David: True. I don’t actually think any of the hotels in Hong Kong count as cheap. And the cheapest ones do leave a lot to be desired.
Melody: 唔, 雖然唔一定, 但係我始終覺得大部份都係一分價錢一分貨㗎喇!(m4 , seoi1 jin4 m4 jat1 ding6 , daan6 hai6 ngo5 ci2 zung1 gok3 dak1 daai6 bou6 fan6 dou1 hai6 jat1 fan1 gaa3 cin4 jat1 fan1 fo3 gaa3 laa3 !)
David: Right. You get what you pay for as they say.
Melody: 冇錯。(mou5 co3 。)

David: Of course, must be.
Melody: 梗 係, 梗係。(gan2 hai6, gan2 hai6。)
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
David: Let’s take a closer look at some of these words. Our first word is
Melody: 總統套房。(zung2 tung2 tou3 fong2 。)
David: Presidential suite.
Melody: 總統套房。(zung2 tung2 tou3 fong2 。)
David: Presidential suite.
Melody: 總統套房, 咁其實總統呢其實係..... (zung2 tung2 tou3 fong2 , gam2 kei4 sat6 zung2 tung2 ne1 kei4 sat6 hai6 .....)
David: It means president.
Melody: 冇錯, 咁後面個套房呢就係表示 譬如有廁所嘅房間。(mou5 co3 , gam2 hau6 min6 go3 tou3 fong2 ne1 zau6 hai6 biu2 si6 pei3 jyu4 jau5 ci3 so2 ge3 fong4 gaan1 。)
David: Right. So it’s a couple of rooms put together into a suite of some kind.
Melody: 唔,冇錯。(m4 ,mou5 co3 。)
David: Right. So it’s only big or more expensive rooms that would be a
Melody: 套房。(tou3 fong2 。)
David: So depending on the hotel, it may or may not have a presidential suite. That’s really high class but we have a number of other expensive packages as well.
Melody: 係呀!譬如話 豪華套房。(hai6 aa3 !pei3 jyu4 waa6 hou4 waa4 tou3 fong2 。)
David: Luxury suite.
Melody: 豪華套房, 或者商務套房。(hou4 waa4 tou3 fong2 , waak6 ze2 soeng1 mou6 tou3 fong2 。)
David: A business suite.
Melody: 商務套房。(soeng1 mou6 tou3 fong2 。)
David: Much more common in Hong Kong. It usually means you’ve got the bedroom and then you’ve got a working space of some kind.
Melody: 係, 冇錯, 所以總共有三種, 總統套房, 豪華套房, 同埋商務套房。(hai6 , mou5 co3 , so2 ji5 zung2 gung6 jau5 saam1 zung2 , zung2 tung2 tou3 fong2 , hou4 waa4 tou3 fong2 , tung4 maai4 soeng1 mou6 tou3 fong2 。)
David: Right and of course at the other end of the spectrum, if you are just passing through, you need a place to sleep. We have the single room
Melody: 單人房。(daan1 jan4 fong2 。)
David: And the double room
Melody: 雙人房, 單人房, 雙人房。(soeng1 jan4 fong2 , daan1 jan4 fong2 , soeng1 jan4 fong2 。)
David: Now when you are staying at a hotel, in addition to the type of room, you will probably also want to know the hotel grade. In this case, we have a 5-Star hotel.
Melody: 五星級酒店, 五星級。(ng5 sing1 kap1 zau2 dim3 , ng5 sing1 kap1 。)
David: Five star.
Melody: 五星級。(ng5 sing1 kap1 。)
David: Five star.
Melody: 唔, 通常呢五星級酒店會好貴, 所以呢如果想住平啲嘅話呢, 可以住四星級, 三星級, 兩星級, 或者係一星級。(m4 , tung1 soeng4 ne1 ng5 sing1 kap1 zau2 dim3 wui2 hou2 gwai3 , so2 ji5 ne1 jyu4 gwo2 soeng2 zyu6 peng4 di1 ge3 waa2 ne1 , ho2 ji5 zyu6 sei3 sing1 kap1 , saam1 sing1 kap1 , loeng5 sing1 kap1 , waak6 ze2 hai6 jat1 sing1 kap1 。)
David: Yeah. If you are really slumming it, you can go for the 1-Star hotels. Now, in Hong Kong, you can of course expect all of the hotels to have pretty much every amenity.
Melody: 唔,冇錯。(m4 ,mou5 co3 。)
David: But when you cross over into Shenzhen and Guangdong, that isn’t the case.
Melody: 係呀!係咁樣。但係呢你要記得檢查佢哋有冇熱水。( hai6 aa3 !hai6 gam2 joeng2 。daan6 hai6 ne1 nei5 jiu3 gei3 dak1 gim2 caa4 keoi5 dei6 jau5 mou5 jit6 seoi2 。)
David: Right. They may not have hot water.
Melody: 熱水。(jit6 seoi2 。)
David: Right. In fact, some of them may not even have cold water.
Melody: 凍水, 凍水, 咁就太慘啦!點住?(dung3 seoi2 , dung3 seoi2 , gam2 zau6 taai3 caam2 laa3 !dim2 zyu6 ?)
David: Right. Well that’s rural China. Maybe it’s not even a hotel. Anyway our next word is a bit tricky but it’s more and more popular these days.
Melody: 唔, 你係指 環保?(m4 , nei5 hai6 zi2 waan4 bou2 ?)
David: Yes and that means environmentally friendly.
Melody: 環保。(waan4 bou2 。)
David: So this is an adjective in Cantonese.
David: Right and that means low carbon living and energy efficiency are very environmentally friendly.
Melody: 係呀!冇錯, 低碳生活, 節用能源都係非常環保嘅。(hai6 aa3 !mou5 co3 , dai1 taan3 sang1 wut6 , zit3 jung6 nang4 jyun4 dou1 hai6 fei1 soeng4 waan4 bou2 ge3 。)
David: Right and all of this language, you are going to see more and more frequently in Hong Kong especially at higher level hotels.
Melody: 冇錯。(mou5 co3 。)
David: That said, that’s our vocab for today. In our grammar point, we’ve got a phrase you are going to be using all the time. Let’s get to it.

Lesson focus

David: Our grammar point today is a phrase we can use when we are assuming things.
Melody: 就當。(zau6 dong3 。)
David: Just think of it as
Melody: 就當, 喺對話入面呢我哋聽到 就當環保。(zau6 dong3 , hai2 deoi3 waa6 jap6 min6 ne1 ngo5 dei6 teng1 dou2 zau6 dong3 waan4 bou2 。)
David: Just think of it as environmentally friendly.
Melody: 就當環保。(zau6 dong3 waan4 bou2 。)
David: Just take it as being green.
Melody: 我哋呢仲通常會聽到 就當冇講。(ngo5 dei6 ne1 zung6 tung1 soeng4 wui2 teng1 dou2 zau6 dong3 mou5 gong2 。)
David: Which means just take it as if it wasn’t said really.
Melody: 就當冇講。(zau6 dong3 mou5 gong2 。)
David: Just pretend, it wasn’t said.
Melody: 唔, 咁我哋通常安慰人嗰陣時呢就會用到, 譬如話 佢亂講㗎!就當佢冇講啦!(m4 , gam2 ngo5 dei6 tung1 soeng4 ngon1 wai3 jan4 go2 zan6 si4 ne1 zau6 wui2 jung6 dou2 , pei3 jyu4 waa6 keoi5 lyun2 gong2 gaa3 !zau6 dong3 keoi5 mou5 gong2 laa1 !)
David: He was just talking nonsense. Don’t take it personally.
Melody: 佢亂講㗎!就當佢冇講啦!(keoi5 lyun2 gong2 gaa3 !zau6 dong3 keoi5 mou5 gong2 laa1 !)
David: He was just talking nonsense. Don’t take it personally. You will often also hear people say
Melody: 就當黑仔。(zau6 dong3 hak1 zai2 。)
David: Just take it as bad luck.
Melody: 就當黑仔。(zau6 dong3 hak1 zai2 。)
David: Which is another way of saying don’t take it personally.
Melody: 係呀!冇錯 (hai6 aa3 !mou5 co3 )
David: It’s not your fault, it’s just…
Melody: 黑仔。(hak1 zai2 。)
David: For instance
Melody: 譬如話飛機又要延遲, 就當黑仔啦!(pei3 jyu4 waa6 fei1 gei1 jau6 jiu3 jin4 ci4 , zau6 dong3 hak1 zai2 laa1 !)
David: The plane is delayed again. Just take it as bad luck.
Melody: 飛機又要延遲, 就當黑仔啦!(fei1 gei1 jau6 jiu3 jin4 ci4 , zau6 dong3 hak1 zai2 laa1!)
David: The plane is delayed. It is just bad luck, that’s all. So this is a set phrase but in addition to that first meaning, there is a second meaning tucked in here as well. We often see it used as even if.
Melody: 就當有另外一個用法。(zau6 dong3 jau5 ling6 ngoi6 jat1 go3 jung6 faat3 。)
David: Right even if…
Melody: 冇錯。(mou5 co3 。)
David: In these kind of situations, you will also run into it at the head of the sentence. For instance
Melody: 就當你有錢。(zau6 dong3 nei5 jau5 cin2 。)
David: Even if you have money.
Melody: 就當你有錢, 你都買唔起寶馬。(zau6 dong3 nei5 jau5 cin2 , nei5 dou1 maai5 m4 hei2 bou2 maa5 。)
David: Even if you have money, you still can’t afford a BMW.
Melody: 就當你有錢, 你都未至於咁有錢。(zau6 dong3 nei5 jau5 cin2 , nei5 dou1 mei6 zi3 jyu1 gam3 jau5 cin2 。)
David: Even if you have money, you don’t have that much money.
Melody: 唔, 或者我再比你一個例子吖!就當你冇學過粵語。(m4 , waak6 ze2 ngo5 zoi3 bei2 nei5 jat1 go3 lai6 zi2 aa1 !zau6 dong3 nei5 mou5 hok6 gwo3 jyut6 jyu5 。)
David: Even if you haven’t studied Cantonese
Melody: 就當你冇學過粵語, 睇表情都知佢講咩。(zau6 dong3 nei5 mou5 hok6 gwo3 jyut6 jyu5 , tai2 biu2 cing4 dou1 zi1 keoi5 gong2 me1 。)
David: Even if you haven’t studied Cantonese, you will know what he is saying by looking at his expression.
Melody: 所以呢我哋有兩個意思, 第一個呢係指安慰人嗰陣時, 意思係唔好太在意, 第二個呢係表示假設。(so2 ji5 ne1 ngo5 dei6 jau5 loeng5 go3 ji3 si1 , dai6 jat1 go3 ne1 hai6 zi2 ngon1 wai3 jan4 go2 zan6 si4 , ji3 si1 hai6 m4 hou2 taai3 zoi6 ji3 , dai6 ji6 go3 ne1 hai6 biu2 si6 gaa2 cit3 。)
David: Right and actually these two meanings linguistically are related and the reason for this is the informal Cantonese.
Melody: 當。(dong3 。)
David: Has a meaning of to be – for something to be some way.
Melody: 冇錯。(mou5 co3 。)
David: So we are literally saying, even or then if things are this way.
Melody: 係呀!所以佢哋有兩個意思, 大家要記住啦!(hai6 aa3 !so2 ji5 keoi5 dei6 jau5 loeng5 go3 ji3 si1 , daai6 gaa1 jiu3 gei3 zyu6 laa3 !)
David: Right. In the first meaning we are saying, even though this is the case, it isn’t that bad. Don’t take it personally and in the second, we are saying even if it’s the case, there are going to be some bad consequences.
Melody: 唔,冇錯。(m4 ,mou5 co3 。)
David: So even if you haven’t studied Cantonese.
Melody: 就當你冇學過粵語。(zau6 dong3 nei5 mou5 hok6 gwo3 jyut6 jyu5 。)
David: Look at his expression and you will know what he said.
Melody: 睇佢嘅表情都知佢講咩嘢啦!(tai2 keoi5 ge3 biu2 cing4 dou1 zi1 keoi5 gong2 me1 je5 laa1 !)

Outro

David: And with that, we are out of time today. I am David.
Melody: 我係 Melody。(ngo5 hai6 Melody 。)
David: Thanks for listening and we will see you on cantoneseclass101.com
Melody: 希望我哋喺網站上見。(hei1 mong6 ngo5 dei6 hai2 mong5 zaam6 soeng6 gin3 。)
