Thanks for your question!

It's so-called "lazy sound" in Cantonese, and one of the typical cases is the merge of initial n- and l-. For example, many people mix up nei5 and lei5 for 你, but the former should be the correct one. However, the case you've indicated is not that one, we only pronounce laan2, starting with l- for gaai3 laan2.


Definitely! You can skip Jyutping. It just helps to memorize the pronunciation. 😉

My parents are native Cantonese speakers but English is my first language. My issue is when I hear Olivia speaking, I sometimes hear her pronounce words with an "n" sound and sometimes with an "L" sound. In this example gaai3 laan2 she is saying laan2 with an "n" sound and later with an "L" sound. Growing up, we always used the "L" sound. What is the case with that? Also, I skipped the jyutping because I know the sounds so I may not know how to spell out using jyutping.
