Lesson Transcript

Hi everyone! I’m Alisha.
Welcome to Conversational Phrases!
We’ve found that the best way to learn a language is to speak it from day one! And the best way to start speaking is to learn phrases that you’ll use in real conversations.
In this lesson, you’ll learn conversational phrases to answer the question, "What are you good at?" After watching this video, you’ll be able to talk about what you’re good at doing.
Now, let’s take a look at some conversational phrases!
Listen to the dialogue.
你擅長啲咩? (nei5 sin6 coeng4 di1 me1?)
我擅長語言。 (ngo5 sin6 coeng4 jyu5 jin4.)
Once more with the English translation.
你擅長啲咩? (nei5 sin6 coeng4 di1 me1?)
“What are you good at?”
我擅長語言。 (ngo5 sin6 coeng4 jyu5 jin4.)
“I'm good at languages.”
First of all you'll need to learn how to say “What are you good at?”
That's:
你擅長啲咩? (nei5 sin6 coeng4 di1 me1?)
Listen to it again:
你擅長啲咩?, 你擅長啲咩? (nei5 sin6 coeng4 di1 me1?, nei5 sin6 coeng4 di1 me1?)
This Cantonese sentence literally translates as “You good at what?” But it means “What are you good at?”.
Now, how do you answer this question?
The pattern is:
我擅長[skill]。 (ngo5 sin6 coeng4 [skill].)
“I'm good at [skill].”
For example:
“I'm good at languages.”
我擅長語言。, 我擅長語言。 (ngo5 sin6 coeng4 jyu5 jin4., ngo5 sin6 coeng4 jyu5 jin4.)
