Hi everyone! I’m Alisha.
Welcome to Conversational Phrases!
We’ve found that the best way to learn a language is to speak it from day one! And the best way to start speaking is to learn phrases that you’ll use in real conversations.
In this lesson, you’ll learn conversational phrases to answer the question, "What are you doing?" After watching this video, you’ll be able to answer this question and tell someone something about what you’re writing.
Now, let’s take a look at some conversational phrases!
Listen to the dialogue.
你做緊咩? (nei5 zou6 gan2 me1?)
我寫緊日記。 (ngo5 se2 gan2 jat6 gei3.)
Once more with the English translation.
你做緊咩? (nei5 zou6 gan2 me1?)
“What are you doing?”
我寫緊日記。 (ngo5 se2 gan2 jat6 gei3.)
“I'm writing my journal.”
First of all you'll need to learn how to say “What are you doing?”
That's:
你做緊咩? (nei5 zou6 gan2 me1?)
Listen to it again:
你做緊咩?, 你做緊咩? (nei5 zou6 gan2 me1?, nei5 zou6 gan2 me1?)
This Cantonese sentence literally translates as “You doing what?”
But it means “What are you doing?”.
Now, how do you answer this question?
The pattern is:
我寫緊[object]。 (ngo5 se2 gan2 [object].)
“I'm writing [object].”
For example:
“I'm writing my journal.”
我寫緊日記。, 我寫緊日記。 (ngo5 se2 gan2 jat6 gei3., ngo5 se2 gan2 jat6 gei3.)
