Hi everyone! I’m Alisha.
Welcome to Conversational Phrases!
We’ve found that the best way to learn a language is to speak it from day one! And the best way to start speaking is to learn phrases that you’ll use in real conversations.
In this lesson, you’ll learn conversational phrases to answer the question, "What are you doing during the holiday?" After watching this video, you’ll be able to talk about your holiday plans.
Now, let’s take a look at some conversational phrases!
Listen to the dialogue.
你端午節會做咩? (nei5 dyun1 ng5 zit3 wui5 zou6 me1?)
我打算去沙灘。 (ngo5 daa2 syun3 heoi3 saa1 taan1.)
Once more with the English translation.
你端午節會做咩? (nei5 dyun1 ng5 zit3 wui5 zou6 me1?)
“What are you doing for Dragon Boat Festival?”
我打算去沙灘。 (ngo5 daa2 syun3 heoi3 saa1 taan1.)
“I'm planning to go to the beach.”
First of all you'll need to learn how to say “What are you doing for Dragon Boat Festival?”
That's:
你端午節會做咩? (nei5 dyun1 ng5 zit3 wui5 zou6 me1?)
The Dragon Boat Festival commemorates the life and work of the ancient poet, Qu Yuan.
Listen to it again:
你端午節會做咩?, 你端午節會做咩? (nei5 dyun1 ng5 zit3 wui5 zou6 me1?, nei5 dyun1 ng5 zit3 wui5 zou6 me1?)
This Cantonese sentence literally translates as “You Dragon Boat Festival are doing what?” But it means “What are you doing for Dragon Boat Festival?".
Now, how do you answer this question?
The pattern is:
我打算 [plan] 。 (ngo5 daa2 syun3 [plan].)
“I’m planning to [plan].”
For example:
“I'm planning to go to the beach.”
我打算去沙灘。, 我打算去沙灘。 (ngo5 daa2 syun3 heoi3 saa1 taan1., ngo5 daa2 syun3 heoi3 saa1 taan1.)
