POST CONVERSATION BANTER
John: The example conversation this time was a little different, as it wasn’t a conversation but was instead a series of advertisements.
Siuling: In Hong Kong, freedom of expression is important so there are no laws restricting advertisements.
John: It allows advertisers to be creative and appeal to their audiences.
Siuling: You’ll see a lot of standard Chinese, mixed with Cantonese and English.
John: Of course, Hong Kong used to be a British colony, so you still see English around.
Siuling: English also makes the product seem fashionable and trendy.
John: Do people use English in daily communication, too?
Siuling: Yes, people use Cantonese but mix in English phrases and words.
John: I heard that there are some superstitions about different colors in Hong Kong and China. Is that true? Does it affect advertisements?
Siuling: Red is seen as a lucky color. White, blue and black colors are related to death.
John: So try and stay away from those colors!
Siuling: Hong Kong's Airport Authority and Kee Wah Bakery were criticized for using blue and white lanterns for the moon festival.
John: Stick to red lanterns for celebrations! Okay, now onto the vocab.
