POST CONVERSATION BANTER
John: Conferences and exhibitions are a staple of businesses all over the world.
Siuling: That’s right. And it’s no different in Hong Kong.
John: Are there many conferences in Hong Kong each year?
Siuling: There are hundreds! Both global ones, and local ones.
John: Where are they usually held?
Siuling: Usually at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre and the AsiaWorld-Expo.
John: The AsiaWorld-Expo is integrated with the airport, so if you’re coming from abroad, that one will be easy to find!
Siuling: The HKCEC has been awarded "Best Convention and Exhibition Centre in Asia" many times.
John: Is it easy to get to?
Siuling: It’s really convenient. There are many transport links and they’re all excellent.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES

Siuling: 參展商攤位(caam1 zin2 soeng1 taan1 wai2)
John: meaning "exhibitor's booth."
John: Let’s break down this phrase.
Siuling: First is 參(caam1), meaning "attend, join." Next is 展(zin2).
John: This means "display, show." The next part means "shop, company."
Siuling: That’s 商(soeng1). Last is 攤位(taan1 wai2).
John: That means "stall, booth." You use this phrase to talk about the area or booth where companies can display and introduce their product or service.
Siuling: You can also say 展覽攤位(zin2 laam5 taan1 wai2).
John: Can you give us an example using this phrase?
Siuling: Sure. For example, you can say... 請前往參展商攤位索取更多資料。(cing2 cin4 wong5 caam1 zin2 soeng1 taan1 wai2 saak3 ceoi5 gang3 do1 zi1 liu2.)

John: ... which means "Our company welcomes customers to inquire about all information."
John: Okay, now onto the lesson focus.

Lesson focus

John: In this lesson, you'll learn about getting around an expo. To get around, you need to know how to ask for directions.
Siuling: The standard phrase is place, plus ...喺邊度? (…hai2 bin1 dou6?)
John: "Where is the….?" Unlike in English, the place goes first. What kind of places might we need to ask about?
Siuling: How about 會議室 (wui6 ji5 sat1)?
John: "meeting room"
Siuling: 人事部 (jan4 si6 bou6)
John: "HR department"
Siuling: 電梯 (din6 tai1)
John: "escalator"
Siuling: 𨋢 (lip1)
John: "elevator"
Siuling: 登記台 (dang1 gei3 toi4)
John: "registration desk"
Siuling: 洗手間 (sai2 sau2 gaan1)
John: "washroom." So an example of a full sentence is...
Siuling: 會議室喺邊度?(wui6 ji5 sat1 hai2 bin1 dou6?)
John: "Where is the meeting room?" Another important phrase is to ask where you can do something.
Siuling: The base phrase is 請問喺邊度...? (cing2 man6 hai2 bin1 dou6...?)
John: "Excuse me, where can I…?"
Siuling: For example, 請問喺邊度搭𨋢?(cing2 man6 hai2 gin1 dou6 daap3 lip1?)
John: "Excuse me, where can I take the elevator?" If you need to take the elevator, you’ll need to know what the floors are called in Hong Kong.
Siuling: Yes. First is 地下 (dei6 haa5)
John: "ground floor".
Siuling: Next is 一樓 (jat1 lau2)
John: "first floor".
Siuling: 五樓 (ng5 lau2)
John: "fifth floor".
Siuling: 十樓 (sap6 lau2)
John: "tenth floor".
Siuling: To say that something is "on" a floor, use 喺 (hai2) before the floor number. 參展商嘅資料喺二樓。 (caam1 zin2 soeng1 ge3 zi1 liu2 hai2 ji6 lau2.)
John: "The information for exhibitors is on the second floor."
Siuling: We use this preposition for other things too. 喺右邊 (hai2 jau6 bin1)
John: "on the right side."
Siuling: 喺左邊 (hai2 zo2 bin1)
John: "on the left side."

Outro

John: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye!
