Hi Josh Lee,

Thank you for your comment!

We checked the sample sentences in the Review audio, the translation for 你日日喺我耳邊唱歌令我好壓抑。 (nei5 jat6 jat6 hai2 ngo5 ji5 bin1 coeng3 go1 ling6 ngo5 hou2 aat3 jik1.) is correct, 喺我耳邊唱歌 means "singing in my ear". We don't use that term for "to nag", 阿吱阿咗 (aa3 zi1 aa3 zo1) is the common one for referring to "nagging":

你日日喺我耳邊阿吱阿咗令我好壓抑。 “It’s depressing to have you nagging at me everyday.”

For the sentence 上司安排俾我嘅工作令我明白咗咩叫瘋狂。(soeng6 si1 on1 paai4 bei2 ngo5 ge3 gung1 zok3 ling6 ngo5 ming4 baak6 zo2 me1 giu3 fung1 kong4.)

If we use "the work that my boss gave me", it can be translated as 上司俾我嘅工作; we used "arranged" because 安排 means "to arrange", sorry if it sounds unnatural in English.

Regarding 宵夜, in some dialects of English "supper" actually means "dinner"; so we used "late night snack" to specified. (Also note that this meal can be either light or heavy, but all in all, it's quite unhealthy to eat so late at night :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:)

I think there are a few contextual mistakes in the "Review" audio file.

It should be "It's depressing to have you nagging at me everyday" rather "singing at my ear".

"The work that my boss gave me" instead of "arranged for me"

I think 宵夜 should be "supper". "Night snack" is superfluous.

Hi Kevin Philips,

Thank you for your comment.

In Hong Kong although we speak Cantonese, we use the writing system that is almost identical to Mandarin characters, therefore the lesson is not a direct translation from Mandarin to Cantonese, but what we would read in Hong Kong novels/magazines.

For more details, please check https://www.cantoneseclass101.com/spoken-written-cantonese/

We're sad to hear your friends comments, but I believe they learned the language in school with the same approach when they were younger. Understanding the writing system is the foundation in advancing in Cantonese.

Hopefully the second series would be more satisfying, if you are only aiming to learn the conversational Cantonese.

Cheers,

Olivia

Could someone please change the text into actual spoken Cantonese?? It gets rather annoying having read a sad attempt at directly translating mandarin based characters into Cantonese.

My Cantonese is far from perfect, but not once have I ever heard my Hong Kong or Guang Dong friends speaking like this. After I let them read it, they told me to stop paying for your website. They were appalled.

I know the second series has been changed, but I would rather not let an entire first series go to waste.

Thanks, Olivia. I didn't know about that usage of 的.

Hi Yoshi,

You're right, 地 is often used as an adjunct after an adjective to form an adverbial phrase; but 的 is also a very common adjectival suffix. So in this sentence, both could be used.

Not sure about this but shouldn't "使勁全力的" be “使勁全力地” given “衝”, “跳” and "叫" are verbs?

I noticed that the past 3 audio blogs have a Review that points to an empty webpage.
