Lesson Transcript

Hi, guys! Welcome to Cantonese Top Words. My name is Olivia and today, we are going to talk about, “What are your top 10 language learning goals for the year?”.
1. 我會上晒CantoneseClass101.com嘅Survival Phrases系列, 每日聽兩課。 (ngo5 wui5 soeng5 saai3 CantoneseClass101.com ge3 Survival Phrases hai6 lit6, mui5 jat6 teng1 loeng5 fo3.) "I'll finish Survival Phrases series on CantoneseClass101.com by listening to two lessons a day."
Two lessons a day, that’s easy to achieve and that’s a very good goal. Are you going to do more lessons a day, maybe?
2. 我會睇晒一本中文書, 每日睇十頁。 (ngo5 wui5 tai2 saai3 jat1 bun2 zung1 man2 syu1, mui5 jat6 tai2 sap6 jip6.) "I'll finish reading one Chinese book by reading 10 pages a day."
Next, 我會睇晒一本中文書, 每日睇十頁。 (ngo5 wui5 tai2 saai3 jat1 bun2 zung1 man2 syu1, mui5 jat6 tai2 sap6 jip6.) "I'll finish reading one Chinese book by reading 10 pages a day."
That’s great, but once you start reading a book, it’s really hard to limit to only 10 pages especially if it’s a good story, I cannot let the book go. I’ll just stay up all night and read as much as I can. By the way, Chinese books, they are not written in Cantonese, because Cantonese is more like a spoken language. Once it’s on a written form, it’s similar to Mandarin so they’re standard Chinese writing. So it will be a little different.
For example - 我哋一齊 (ngo5 dei6 jat1 cai4) will become 我們一起 (ngo5 mun4 jat1 hei2), so that’s a bit different, but if you want to learn, you can still do it.
3. 我嘅廣東話測驗會合格。 (ngo5 ge3 gwong2 dung1 waa2 cak1 jim6 wui5 hap6 gaak3.) "I'll pass my Cantonese test."
Are you going to have a test soon? Good luck!
4. 我會每日睇港產片,直至我明晒成套戲。 (ngo5 wui5 mui5 jat6 tai2 gong2 caan2 pin2, zik6 zi3 ngo5 ming4 saai3 seng4 tou3 hei3.) "I'll fully understand one Hong Kong movie by watching it every day."
That’s actually a pretty good way, I never thought of it this way.
5. 我會同講廣東話嘅朋友用廣東話自我介紹三分鐘。 (ngo5 wui5 tung4 gong2 gwong2 dung1 waa2 ge3 pang4 jau5 jung6 gwong2 dung1 waa2 zi6 ngo5 gaai3 siu6 saam1 fan1 zung1.) "I'll give a 3 minute introductory speech in Cantonese to my Cantonese friends."
That’s a very good practice and they will be impressed, I’m sure. Three minutes, that’s pretty long. I don’t think I can even do it in my native language. What do you talk about? Three minutes?
6. 我會記住五首廣東歌。 (ngo5 wui5 gei3 zyu6 ng5 sau2 gwong2 dung1 go1.) "I'll memorize 5 Cantonese songs."
A lot of people actually started learning Cantonese by listening to the songs, but then again, most of the songs are in written form. You get to learn a lot of vocabularies, but those are usually in written form. We don’t sing the way we speak so be careful.
7. 我會用CantoneseClass101.com嘅認字卡記住三百五十個字。 (ngo5 wui5 jung6 CantoneseClass101.com ge3 jing6 zi6 kaat1 gei3 zyu6 saam1 baak3 ng5 sap6 go3 zi6.) "I'll finish memorizing 350 words with flashcards on CantoneseClass101.com."
Wow 350, that’s a lot. Yeah, make use of our flashcard tool. They’re really helpful.
8. 我會用廣東話寫十張明信片畀我嘅香港朋友。 (ngo5 wui5 jung6 gwong2 dung1 waa2 se2 sap6 zoeng1 ming4 seon3 pin2 bei2 ngo5 ge3 hoeng1 gong2 pang4 jau5.) "I'll write 10 postcards in Cantonese to my Hong Kong friends."
That’s excellent, especially when you’re travelling. Send a postcard to your friends and good practice to write in Cantonese.
9. 我會學識點講過去, 而家, 同將來發生嘅事。 (ngo5 wui5 hok6 sik1 dim2 gong2 gwo3 heoi3, ji4 gaa1, tung4 zoeng1 loi4 faat3 sang1 ge3 si6.) "I'll learn how to talk about past, present and future events."
One way to really practice your language is to write a journal every day. You can write about what you did today and what are you planning to do tomorrow and stuff like that. That’s a good way to practice past tense and future tense.
10. 我每日記五個字, 將會識得一百五十個字。 (ngo5 mui5 jat6 gei3 ng5 go3 zi6, zoeng1 wui5 sik1 dak1 jat1 baak3 ng5 sap6 go3 zi6.) "I'll master 150 words by memorizing 5 words a day."
So five words a day, in a month, you’ll learn 150 words. That’s a pretty good progress. Remember to review. Don’t just learn the words and then forget about it the next day. You always have to review to refresh your memories. That’s how you remember the words.
That’s it for today. I’ll see you next time. My name is Olivia. Bye!
