Eric: Welcome to 3-Minute Cantonese Season 1, Lesson 25 - On the Phone. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to understand basic phone vocabulary in Cantonese.
Body
Eric: First, we’ll learn how to say 'Hello' to answer the phone in Cantonese.
Olivia: [Normal] 喂。(wai2)
Eric: This expression has only one word meaning 'Hello.’ It is only used when answering the phone.
Olivia: [Normal] 喂。 [Slow] 喂。 (wai2)
Eric: Listen again to the word meaning 'Hello’ on the phone.
Olivia: [Slow] 喂。 [Normal] 喂。(wai2)
Eric: Ok, now let's take a look at the way to say 'This is Olivia.’
Olivia: [Normal] 我係Olivia.(ngo5 hai6 Olivia.)
Eric: First is a pronoun meaning 'I'
Olivia: [Normal] 我 [Slow] 我 (ngo5)
Eric: Next is the verb meaning 'am’
Olivia: [Normal] 係 [Slow] 係(hai6)
Eric: Last is the person’s name, Olivia.
Olivia: [Normal] Olivia [Slow] Olivia
Eric: Listen again to the phrase meaning 'This is Olivia.’

Eric: Next we have the way to say 'May I talk to Mr. Wong?’

Eric: Now it's time for a quick cultural insight.
Olivia: Landline telephone numbers in Hong Kong start with the number 2 and are mostly 8-digit numbers, for example, 2540-6110. There is no area code in Hong Kong. The country code 852 has remained in use since 1997 after China re-took control of Hong Kong. The telephone number for emergency services such as Police, Fire Service and Ambulance is 999.
