| Hello, and welcome to the Culture Class- Holidays in Hong Kong Series at CantoneseClass101.com. In this series, we’re exploring the traditions behind holidays and observances in Hong Kong. I’m Eric, and you're listening to Season 1, Lesson 15 Easter, which is 復活節 in Cantonese. |
| In this lesson, we will learn how Hong Kong people celebrate Easter. Is Easter a religious event to you? Or is it about chocolate or just a vacation? Let's see what Hong Kong people consider the Easter Day to mean. |
| Now, before we get into more detail, I've got a question for you- Do you know how many Christians and Catholics there are in Hong Kong? |

| Easter is set to be the first Sunday after the vernal equinox full moon. The Friday before Easter is called Good Friday, or 耶穌受難日 in Cantonese; and the Monday after is called Easter Monday or 復活節星期一. In Hong Kong, the four days that span from Good Friday to Easter Monday are designated as public holidays. |
| There are many different ways Hong Kong people enjoy this Easter holiday season. Although this is a religious holiday, all businesses see this long holiday as a great business opportunity. Companies plan ahead for this prime time of consumption, making Easter a commercialized festival. |
| Most hotels and shopping malls will put up decorations and organize Easter egg-hunting games, or hold workshops for making Easter eggs 復活蛋 or chocolate eggs 朱古力蛋. |
| Hong Kong Disneyland, or 香港迪士尼樂園 in Cantonese, is also magnificently decorated, with Easter-themed activities and limited edition merchandise to attract a large number of tourists and locals to visit. Since Easter is not a public holiday in mainland China, there are fewer mainlander tourists, so Disneyland seems to be less crowded than on other holidays. |
| Many restaurants prepare Easter-themed menus during the holiday. Bakeries and patisseries create sweets and snacks in the shapes of cute bunnies and chicks. |
