Hi everyone! I'm Alisha. |
Welcome to Conversational Phrases! |
We've found that the best way to learn a language is to speak it from day one! And the best way to start speaking is to learn phrases that you'll use in real conversations. |
In this lesson, you'll learn conversational phrases to use when apologizing to someone. After watching this video, you'll be able to apologize and say what you're apologizing for. |
Now, let's take a look at some conversational phrases! |
Listen to the dialogue. |
對唔住,我遲到。 (deoi3 m4 zyu6, ngo5 ci4 dou3.) |
唔緊要。 (m4 gan2 jiu3.) |
Once more with the English translation. |
對唔住,我遲到。 (deoi3 m4 zyu6, ngo5 ci4 dou3.) |
“I'm sorry for being late.” |
唔緊要。 (m4 gan2 jiu3.) |
“Don't worry about it.” |
First of all you'll need to learn how to say "I'm sorry for [reason]." |
The pattern is: |
對唔住,[reason]。 (deoi3 m4 zyu6, [reason].) |
This Cantonese sentence literally translates as "Sorry, [reason]." But it means "I'm sorry for [reason].". |
For example: |
"I'm sorry for being late." |
對唔住,我遲到。, 對唔住,我遲到。 (deoi3 m4 zyu6, ngo5 ci4 dou3., deoi3 m4 zyu6, ngo5 ci4 dou3.) |
Now, how do you respond that it's okay? |
唔緊要。 (m4 gan2 jiu3.) |
"Don't worry about it." |
Listen to it again: |
唔緊要。, 唔緊要。 (m4 gan2 jiu3., m4 gan2 jiu3.) |
This Cantonese sentence translates as "Not important." But it means "Don't worry about it." |
