INTRODUCTION
David: Welcome to cantoneseclass101.com. I am David.
Nicole: 大家好,我係 (daai6 gaa1 hou2 ,ngo5 hai6) Nicole.
David: And we are here today with upper intermediate, season 1, Lesson 16. On Honeymoon in Hong Kong.
Nicole: 冇錯啦!喺香港傾吓去邊度渡蜜月好呢! (mou5 co3 laak3 !hai2 hoeng1 gong2 king1 haa5 heoi3 bin1 dou6 dou6 mat6 jyut6 hou2 ne1 !)
David: Right and the dialogue today is Nicole’s advice on how you should spend your honeymoon if you are getting married in Hong Kong.
Nicole: 香港有好多好嘅地方嘅,老實講。 (hoeng1 gong2 jau5 hou2 do1 hou2 ge3 dei6 fong1 ge3 ,lou5 sat6 gong2 。)
David: Yeah. So Nicole, what’s happening in the dialogue?
Nicole: Eh… 應該結咗婚嘅老公同老婆呢就商量緊去邊度渡蜜月。 (jing3 goi1 git3 zo2 fan1 ge3 lou5 gung1 tung4 lou5 po4 ne1 zau6 soeng1 loeng4 gan2 heoi3 bin1 dou6 dou6 mat6 jyut6 。)
David: Yeah. So they are trying to decide where to go on their honeymoon. We are going to hear what they have to say, casual Cantonese as always.
DIALOGUE
A:豬豬,不如我哋去馬爾代夫渡蜜月吖! (A: zyu1 zyu1, bat1 jyu4 ngo5 dei6 heoi3 maa5 ji5 doi6 fu1 dou6 mat6 jyut6 aa1!)
B:俗啲喎,個個都去馬爾代夫。不如我哋去個冇乜遊客嘅地方吖? (B: zuk6 di1 wo3, go3 go3 dou1 heoi3 maa5 ji5 doi6 fu1. bat1 jyu4 ngo5 dei6 heoi3 go3 mou5 mat1 jau4 haak3 ge3 dei6 fong1 aa1?)
A:塞舌爾點呀?連威廉王子都帶王妃去㗎。 (A: coi3 sit3 ji5 dim2 aa6? lin4 wai1 lim4 wong4 zi2 dou1 daai3 won4 fei1 heoi3 gaa3.)
B:你覺得我似王子定係你似公主呀? (B: nei5 gok3 dak1 ngo5 ci5 wong4 zi2 ding6 hai6 nei5 ci5 gung1 zyu2 aa3?)
A:咁...不如不丹吖!梁朝偉帶劉嘉玲結婚嘅勝地呀,聽講好少人去㗎。 (A: gam2... bat1 jyu4 bat1 daan1 aa1! loeng4 ciu4 wai5 daai3 lau4 gaa1 ling4 git3 fan1 ge3 sing3 dei6 aa6, teng1 gong2 hou2 siu2 jan4 heoi3 gaa3.)
B:因為啲宗教國家好難去吖嘛。 (B: jan1 wai6 di1 zung1 gaau3 gwok3 gaa1 hou2 naan4 heoi3 aa1 maa3.)
A:咁邊度有水清沙幼,容易去,仲冷門嘅地方呀? (A: gam2 bin1 dou6 jau5 seoi2 cing1 saa1 jau3, jung4 ji6 heoi3, zung6 laang5 mun2 ge3 dei6 fong1 aa3?)
B:南丫島,搭小輪半個鐘頭,唔使跟團,百分百自由行。 (B: naam4 aa1 dou2, daap3 siu2 leon4 bun3 go3 zung1 tau4, m4 sai2 gan1 tyun4, baak3 fan6 baak3 zi6 jau4 hang4.)
A:但係... (A: daan6 hai6...)
B:仲唔使擔心人生地不熟,語言不通添! (B: zung6 m4 sai2 daam1 sam1 jan4 sang1 dei6 bat1 suk6, jyu5 jin4 bat1 tung1 tim1!)
A:Darling, how about we go to the Maldives on our honeymoon?
B:How vulgar, everyone goes to the Maldives, why don't we go some place without tourists.
A:The Seychelles? Even Prince William took his fiancee there.
B:You think that I'm a prince or you're a princess?
A:How about Bhutan, it's renowned for Tony Leung taking Karina Lau there to get married, I've heard not many people go.
B:That's because it's hard to travel to those religious countries.
A:So where can we find the place with perfect beaches that's easy to get to, and not so popular?
B:Lamma Island. It's thirty minutes by ferry, no need for a tour group, we'll have 100% self-directed travel.
A:But...
B:And we won't even need to worry about strange peoples or cultures.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
David: I am not sure I agree with the characterization of Lima Island having perfect beaches though.
Nicole: 有一部份 Okay 嘅。 (jau5 jat1 bou6 fan6 Okay ge2。)
David: Like kind of nice?
Nicole: 唔,因為而家越來越多人去。 (m4 ,jan1 wai6 ji4 gaa1 jyut6 lei4 jyut6 do1 jan4 heoi3 。)
David: Yeah. Anyway, we’ve got a lot of vocab here about honeymoons and going on a vacation. So let’s get to it.
VOCAB LIST
Nicole: 渡蜜月。 (dou6 mat6 jyut6.)
David: To spend a honeymoon.
Nicole: 渡 蜜 月, 渡蜜月, 遊客。 (dou6 mat6 jyut6, dou6 mat6 jyut6, jau4 haak3.)
David: Tourist.
Nicole: 遊 客, 遊客, 王妃。 (jau4 haak3, jau4 haak3, wong4 fei1.)
David: Wife of a prince.
Nicole: 王 妃, 王妃, 王子。 (wong4 fei1, wong4 fei1, wong4 zi2.)
David: Prince.
Nicole: 王 子, 王子, 公主。 (wong4 zi2, wong4 zi2, gung1 zyu2.)
David: Princess.
Nicole: 公 主, 公主, 勝地。 (gung1 zyu2, gung1 zyu2, sing3 dei6.)
David: A renowned place.
Nicole: 勝 地, 勝地, 宗教國家。 (sing3 dei6, sing3 dei6, zung1 gaau3 gwok3 gaa1.)
David: A religious country.
Nicole: 宗 教 國 家, 宗教國家, 水清沙幼。 (zung1 gaau3 gwok3 gaa1, zung1 gaau3 gwok3 gaa1, seoi2 cing1 saa1 jau3.)
David: A perfect beach.
Nicole: 水 清 沙 幼, 水清沙幼, 冷門。 (seoi2 cing1 saa1 jau3, seoi2 cing1 saa1 jau3, laang5 mun2.)
David: Unpopular.
Nicole: 冷 門, 冷門, 跟團。 (laang5 mun2, laang5 mun2, gan1 tyun4.)
David: To join tour group.
Nicole: 跟 團, 跟團, 自由行。 (gan1 tyun4, gan1 tyun4, zi6 jau4 hang4.)
David: Self directed travel.
Nicole: 自 由 行, 自由行。 (zi6 jau4 hang4, zi6 jau4 hang4.)
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
David: Let’s take a closer look at some of these words and phrases. First up, the word we translated as perfect beach.
Nicole: 水清沙幼。 (seoi2 cing1 saa1 jau3 。)
David: Which is literally clear waters and fine sand.
Nicole: Yeah, 呢個單詞係用嚟描述一個非常之靚嘅海灘嘅。 (ni1 go3 daan1 ci4 hai6 jung6 lai4 miu4 seot6 jat1 go3 fei1 soeng4 zi1 leng3 ge3 hoi2 taan1 ge3 。)
David: Yeah and we were actually a bit loose with the translation too because we are translating it like it’s a noun.
Nicole: 唔,其實應該係一個形容詞嚟嘅。 (m4 ,kei4 sat6 jing3 goi1 hai6 jat1 go3 jing4 jung4 ci4 lai4 ge3 。)
David: Right. So it’s being used like an adjective.
Nicole: 冇錯啦!譬如話馬爾代夫有水清沙幼嘅海灘。 (mou5 co3 laak3 !pei3 jyu4 waa6 maa5 ji5 doi6 fu1 jau5 seoi2 cing1 saa1 jau3 ge3 hoi2 taan1 。)
David: Right. The Maldives have exceptionally perfect beaches.
Nicole: 唔,香港都有咁樣嘅地方嘅。 (m4 ,hoeng1 gong2 dou1 jau5 gam2 joeng2 ge3 dei6 fong1 ge3 。)
David: Yeah. I wouldn’t describe Hong Kong beaches as being this way.
Nicole: I would.
David: Really?
Nicole: Eh ….. 可能你未搵到,我覺得長洲有個比較靚嘅海灘。 (ho2 nang4 nei5 mei6 wan2 dou2 ,ngo5 gok3 dak1 coeng4 zau1 jau5 go3 bei2 gaau3 leng3 ge3 hoi2 taan1 。)
David: Okay. That said, we do have this word here for where we are going to find them in countries that are religious.
Nicole: 宗教國家。 (zung1 gaau3 gwok3 gaa1 。)
David: And Bhutan is a religious country although it doesn’t really have beaches. So sample sentence for you. There are no perfect beaches in Bhutan.
Nicole: 不丹冇水清沙幼嘅海灘。 (bat1 daan1 mou5 seoi2 cing1 saa1 jau3 ge3 hoi2 taan1 。)
David: Yeah, Bhutan does not have perfect beaches.
Nicole: 不丹冇水清沙幼嘅海灘。 (bat1 daan1 mou5 seoi2 cing1 saa1 jau3 ge3 hoi2 taan1 。)
David: Okay. Bhutan does have a lot of sacred places.
Nicole: 勝地。 (sing3 dei6 。)
David: Sacred places.
Nicole: 勝地。 (sing3 dei6 。)
David: And we also translated this as renowned places.
Nicole: 冇錯啦!因為喺廣東話入邊勝地唔一定係好神聖嘅地方,佢只係好出名嘅地方。 (mou5 co3 laak3 !jan1 wai6 hai2 gwong2 dung1 waa2 jap6 bin1 sing3 dei6 m4 jat1 ding6 hai6 hou2 san4 sing3 ge3 dei6 fong1 ,keoi5 zi2 hai6 hou2 ceot1 meng2 ge3 dei6 fong1 。)
David: Yeah and this word itself is really difficult to translate because we are not just talking about something that’s religious in that sense.
Nicole: 因為可能呢個地方係好多人去㗎啦已經,佢同宗教無關。 (jan1 wai6 ho2 nang4 ni1 go3 dei6 fong1 hai6 hou2 do1 jan4 heoi3 gaa3 laa3 ji5 ging1 ,keoi5 tung4 zung1 gaau3 mou4 gwaan1 。)
David: Yeah. So in our dialogue, we heard it in this line.
Nicole: 梁朝偉帶劉嘉玲結婚嘅勝地呀! (loeng4 ciu4 wai5 daai3 lau4 gaa1 ling4 git3 fan1 ge3 sing3 dei6 aa3 !)
David: Right. So we translated that as, it’s renowned for Tony Leung taking Carina Lau there but really what we are saying is, we are saying that Tony Leung and Carina Lau went to this renowned place.
Nicole: 冇錯。 (mou5 co3 。)
David: So there is a logical problem there as a westerner because it wasn’t really renowned before they went.
Nicole: Ah… 冇錯啦! (mou5 co3 laak3 !)
David: Right it’s..
Nicole: 因為...係因為佢哋去咗嗰地方,所以大家報導咗好多之後,大家先知道不丹。 (jan1 wai6 ...hai6 jan1 wai6 keoi5 dei6 heoi3 zo2 go2 dei6 fong1 ,so2 ji5 daai6 gaa1 bou3 dou6 zo2 hou2 do1 zi1 hau6 ,daai6 gaa1 sin1 zi1 dou6 bat1 daan1 。)
David: Yes it’s renowned now because they went.
Nicole: 係呀! (hai6 aa3!)
David: So anyway, that’s Cantonese for you. Nicole, are there any words on this list you’d like to highlight?
Nicole: 冷門。 (laang5 mun2 。)
David: Unpopular.
Nicole: 冷門, 因為佢嘅相反嘅詞就係 “熱門”。 (laang5 mun2 , jan1 wai6 keoi5 ge3 soeng1 faan2 ge3 ci4 zau6 hai6 “jit6 mun42”。)
David: Popular.
Nicole: 熱門。 (jit6 mun42。)
David: Right. Okay so Nicole, what are some popular honeymoon destinations in Hong Kong?
Nicole: 你話喺香港本土吖?定係飛... 飛離開香港。 (nei5 waa6 hai2 hoeng1 gong2 bun2 tou2 aa1 ?ding6 hai6 fei1 ... fei1 lei4 hoi1 hoeng1 gong2 。)
David: Are there popular honeymoon destinations in Hong Kong?
Nicole: Good question. No!
David: I’d say it’s mostly Thailand and Bali these days.
Nicole: 冇錯啦!東南亞嘅地方,峇里島呀!泰國呀!馬來西亞。 (mou5 co3 laak3 !dung1 naam4 ngaa3 ge3 dei6 fong1 ,baa1 lei5 dou2 aa3 !taai3 gwok3 aa3 !maa5 loi4 sai1 ngaa3 。)
David: Yeah. So if you ask a friend where should I go on a honeymoon?
Nicole: 去邊度渡 蜜月? ( heoi3 bin1 dou6 dou6 mat6 jyut6 ?)
David: They might answer
Nicole: 峇里島啦!好熱門嘅渡 蜜月嘅勝地。 (baa1 lei5 dou2 laa1 !hou2 jit6 mun2 ge3 dou6 mat6 jyut6 ge3 sing3 dei6 。)
David: Right. Bali is a very popular place to go on honeymoon. Bhutan, is it really that popular these days?
Nicole: 每個人都好想去,但係大家都去唔到,因為你好難攞到個 visa 去.... 去不丹。 (mui5 go3 jan4 dou1 hou2 soeng2 heoi3 ,daan6 hai6 daai6 gaa1 dou1 heoi3 m4 dou2 ,jan1 wai6 nei5 hou2 naan4 lo2 dou2 go3 visa heoi3 .... heoi3 bat1 daan1 。)
David: Okay. So anyway, that’s our vocab for today. We’ve got a grammar point that’s partially review, partially new. Let’s get to it. It’s grammar time. In our last lesson, we taught you a grammar point for saying even

Lesson focus

Nicole: 仲 ……. 添。 (zung6 ……. tim1 。)
David: Which we heard in simple sentences like
Nicole: 佢仲識講西班牙文添。 (keoi5 zung6 sik1 gong2 sai1 baan1 ngaa4 man2 tim1 。)
David: He can even speak Spanish.
Nicole: 佢仲識講西班牙文添。 或者香港機場仲有貓房添。 (keoi5 zung6 sik1 gong2 sai1 baan1 ngaa4 man2 tim1。 waak6 ze2 hoeng1 gong2 gei1 coeng4 zung6 jau5 maau1 fong4 tim1 。)
David: The Hong Kong airport even has a cat prison.
Nicole: 香港機場仲有貓房添! 咁今日我哋聽到呢個句子, “仲唔使擔心人生地不熟,語言不通添!” (hoeng1 gong2 gei1 coeng4 zung6 jau5 maau1 fong4 tim1 ! gam2 gam1 jat6 ngo5 dei6 teng1 dou2 ni1 go3 geoi3 zi2 , “zung6 m4 sai2 daam1 sam1 jan4 saang1 dei6 bat1 suk6 ,jyu5 jin4 bat1 tung1 tim1 !”)
David: And we won’t even need to worry about strange peoples or cultures.
Nicole: 冇錯啦! (mou5 co3 laak3 !)
David: Now what we want to point out today is the difference between this pattern and the second even pattern that we’ve learned.
Nicole: 連...... 都。 (lin4 ...... dou1 。)
David: Yeah. This is another pattern that we see in our dialogue. We hear it in this sentence.
Nicole: 連威廉王子都帶王妃去㗎。 (lin4 wai1 lim4 wong4 zi2 dou1 daai3 wong4 fei1 heoi3 gaa3。)
David: Even prince William took his fiancé there.
Nicole: 連威廉王子都帶王妃去㗎。 (lin4 wai1 lim4 wong4 zi2 dou1 daai3 wong4 fei1 heoi3 gaa3 。)
David: So of these two patterns, what’s the difference? First, let’s look at this pattern.
Nicole: 連...... 都。 (lin4 ...... dou1 。)
David: What we are saying with this pattern is the subject is doing something that’s popular.
Nicole: 冇錯啦!每個人都做呢件事,幾乎連呢個主語都做。 (mou5 co3 laak3 !mui5 go3 jan4 dou1 zou6 ni1 gin6 si6 ,gei1 fu4 lin4 ni1 go3 zyu2 jyu5 dou1 zou6 。)
David: Right. Everyone is doing something to the extent that even this person is doing it.
Nicole: 每個人都識講西班牙文,連佢都識講西班牙文。 (mui5 go3 jan4 dou1 sik1 gong2 sai1 baan1 ngaa4 man2 ,lin4 keoi5 dou1 sik1 gong2 sai1 baan1 ngaa4 man2 。)
David: Yeah. Everyone speaks Spanish. Even he speaks Spanish or
Nicole: 每個機場都有貓房,連香港機場都有貓房。 (mui5 go3 gei1 coeng4 dou1 jau5 maau1 fong4 ,lin4 hoeng1 gong2 gei1 coeng4 dou1 jau5 maau1 fong4 。)
David: Right. Every airport in the world has a cat prison. So of course, even the Hong Kong airport has a cat prison.
Nicole: 但係我哋淨係講笑啫! (daan6 hai6 ngo5 dei6 zing6 hai6 gong2 siu3 ze1 !)
David: Yeah. We are just kidding. The cat prison thing is specific to Hong Kong apparently.
Nicole: And Macau.
David: Yes. Let’s compare this with what happens if we change these sentences to use our second even pattern though.
Nicole: 佢仲識講西班牙文添! (keoi5 zung6 sik1 gong2 sai1 baan1 ngaa4 man2 tim1 !)
David: He even speaks Spanish or
Nicole: 香港機場仲有貓房添! (hoeng1 gong2 gei1 coeng4 zung6 jau5 maau1 fong4 tim1 !)
David: The Hong Kong airport even has a cat prison. We are no longer implying that something is popular and done everywhere. We are saying something very specific about this person or a place.
Nicole: 冇錯啦!即係話 佢除咗廣東話, 英文識講之外,仲識講西班牙文。 (mou5 co3 laak3 !zik1 hai6 waa6 keoi5 ceoi4 zo2 gwong2 dung1 waa2 , jing1 man4 sik1 gong2 zi1 ngoi6 ,zung6 sik1 gong2 sai1 baan1 ngaa4 man2 。)
David: Yeah. It’s a subtle difference. It’s very difficult to explain with audio. So since this is the end of our lesson, I would encourage you to check out the PDFs if you are having trouble with it.
Nicole: 冇錯啦!你可以download 我哋嘅 PDFs 喺高級會員中心, 然之後 print out 嚟睇。 (mou5 co3 laak3 !nei5 ho2 ji5 download ngo5 dei6 ge3 PDFs hai2 gou1 kap1 wui2 jyun4 zung1 sam1 , jin4 zi1 hau6 print out lei4 tai2 。)

Outro

David: Yeah. We write all of this stuff out in the grammar section. It’s a useful way of getting some of these subtle differences to stick. For now though, that is all the time we have. We hope you found this lesson useful. From Hong Kong, right near Festival Walk, I am David.
Nicole: 我係 (ngo5 hai6) Nicole.
David: Thanks for listening and we will see you guys on the site.
Nicole: Bye bye.

Hi Clayton Davis,

希望你遲啲有機會去大陸旅行啦!

不過我想問,「我好莫水」係點解?

我好想去大陸度蜜月啦。我哋啱啱結咗婚嗰陣時,我好莫水,住喺美國去亞洲好貴啦,所以到而家冇機會去大陸。
