Melody: 大家好,我係Melody。(daai6 gaa1 hou2, ngo5 hai6 Melody.)
David: And we are here today with upper beginner, season 1, Lesson 8. Help Me, I Can’t Leave Hong Kong.
Melody: 應該係喺機場,或者喺入關口嗰度發出。(jing3 goi1 hai6 hai2 gei1 coeng4, waak6 ze2 hai2 jap6 gwaan1 hau2 go2 dou6 faat3 ceot1.)
David: Yeah it’s in the airport. We are going to get to whether or not this is the Hong Kong airport in a sec but our dialogue takes place between someone in the check-in counter.
Melody: 冇錯。(mou5 co3.)
David: And an airplane passenger.
Melody: 一個乘客同工作人員嘅對話。(jat1 go3 sing4 haak3 tung4 gung1 zok3 jan4 jyun4 ge3 deoi3 waa6.)
David: Yeah and it is somewhere in the Cantonese speaking world because this is casual Cantonese as always. Let’s get to the dialogue.
DIALOGUE

A:辦唔到。(baan6 m4 dou2.)
David: Once more, a bit more slowly.
(ngo5 zing3 gin2 m4 gin3 saai3 zung6 baan6 m4 baan6 dou2?
A:辦唔到。(baan6 m4 dou2.)
David: And now, with the English translation.
A:請妳出示登機證。 (cing2 nei5 ceot1 si6 dang1 gei1 zing3. )
A: Please present your boarding pass.
B:我登機證唔見咗。 (ngo5 dang1 gei1 zing3 m4 gin3 zo2.)
B: My boarding pass is gone.
A:咁俾我睇下你嘅證件。 (gam2 bei2 ngo5 tai2 haa5 nei5 ge3 zing3 gin2. )
A: Then I need to see your documentation.
B:要身份証定護照? (jiu3 san1 fan2 zing3 ding6 wu6 ziu3?)
B: ID card or passport?
A:兩樣都需要出示。 (loeng5 joeng6 dou1 seoi1 jiu3 ceot1 si6. )
A: Both are needed.
B:我兩樣都揾唔到。(ngo5 loeng5 joeng6 dou1 wan2 m4 dou2. )
B: I can't find either of them.
A:咁你需要重新辦登機證。 (gam2 nei5 seoi1 jiu3 cung4 san1 baan6 dang1 gei1 zing3. )
A: Then you would need to get a new boarding pass.
B:我證件唔見晒仲辦唔辦到? (ngo5 zing3 gin2 m4 gin3 saai3 zung6 baan6 m4 baan6 dou2?)
B: Can I get it without my documentation?
A:辦唔到。(baan6 m4 dou2.)
A: No you can't.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
David: On the one hand, the passenger is sort of being unrealistic.
Melody: 冇錯。(mou5 co3.)
David: On the other hand, in the Hong Kong airport, usually you only need one kind of ID.
Melody: 可能,應該只係需要護照。(ho2 nang4, jing3 goi1 zi2 hai6 seoi1 jiu3 wu6 ziu3.)
David: Yeah I have never needed anything else with my passport. So you are good enough with one. Don’t be scared about coming to Hong Kong if you only have a passport.
Melody: 可能個乘客長得特別奇怪。(ho2 nang4 go3 sing4 haak3 zoeng5 dak1 dak6 bit6 kei4 gwaai3.)
David: Yeah.
Melody: 所以先查得嚴啲。(so2 ji3 sin1 caa4 dak1 jim4 di1.)
David: Yeah. Anyway, our vocab today is all about documentation, papers that you are going to need to travel. Let’s get to our vocab list.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
David: Let’s take a closer look at some of these words. Since our focus today is on documentation, our first word is a boarding pass.
Melody: 登機證 (dang1 gei1 zing3)
David: Boarding pass.
Melody: 登機證 (dang1 gei1 zing3)
David: When you get this in Hong Kong, don’t lose it. It is important.
Melody: 冇錯,好重要㗎。(mou5 co3, hou2 zung6 jiu3 gaa3.)
David: Right. So you will hopefully never have to tell someone that I lost my boarding pass.
Melody: 我唔見咗我嘅登機證。(ngo5 m4 gin3 zo2 ngo5 ge3 dang1 gei1 zing3.)
David: I lost my boarding pass.
Melody: 我唔見咗我嘅登機證。(ngo5 m4 gin3 zo2 ngo5 ge3 dang1 gei1 zing3.)
David: If you do lose your boarding pass, you are going to have to get another one by showing them your ID card.
Melody: 身份證 (san1 fan2 zing3)
David: ID card.
Melody: 身份證 (san1 fan2 zing3)
David: Everyone in Hong Kong gets an ID card. If you are not from Hong Kong though, you are going to have to use your passport.
Melody: 護照 (wu6 ziu3)
David: Passport.
Melody: 護照 (wu6 ziu3)
David: Or your driver’s license.
Melody: 駕駛證 (gaa3 sai2 zing3)
David: Driver’s license.
Melody: 駕駛證 (gaa3 sai2 zing3)
David: So those are three critical pieces of ID.
Melody: 身份證,護照,駕駛證。(san1 fan2 zing3, wu6 ziu3, gaa3 sai2 zing3.)
David: All of these papers are known as documentation.
Melody: 證件。(zing3 gin2.)
David: Melody, can you give us a sample sentence.
Melody: 譬如話,身份證係一種證件。(pei3 jyu4 waa6, san1 fan2 zing3 hai6 jat1 zung2 zing3 gin2.)
David: Your ID card is a kind of documentation.
Melody: 身份證係一種證件。(san1 fan2 zing3 hai6 jat1 zung2 zing3 gin2.)
David: Or the ID card is a kind of documentation.
Melody: 冇錯。(mou5 co3.)
David: Finally when you are getting on a plane, you are going to be asked to show your ID.
Melody: 出示證件。(ceot1 si6 zing3 gin2.)
David: To show identification.
Melody: 請出示證件。(cing2 ceot1 si6 zing3 gin2.)
David: Right. That’s “please show us your ID”.
Melody: 請出示證件。(cing2 ceot1 si6 zing3 gin2.)
David: Right. The verb there is
Melody: 出示 (ceot1 si6)
David: And it can mean to present, to display but you’ve got to show it to someone.
Melody: 出示 (ceot1 si6)
David: So remember, the most critical vocab here are these four kinds of identification you are going to need to travel.
Melody: 登機證 (dang1 gei1 zing3)
David: Boarding pass.
Melody: 身份證 (san1 fan2 zing3)
David: ID card.
Melody: 護照 (wu6 ziu3)
David: Passport.
Melody: 駕駛證 (gaa3 sai2 zing3)
David: Driver’s license; and when you are asked, you are going to be asked to show documentation.
Melody: 請出示證件。(cing2 ceot1 si6 zing3 gin2.)
David: And with that, let’s get on to our grammar point which is about how to say “or” in Cantonese.

Lesson focus

David: Our grammar point today is about how to say or in Cantonese.
Melody: 定。(ding6.)
David: Right. We hear this in the following line in our dialogue.
Melody: 要身份証定護照?(jiu3 san1 fan2 zing3 ding6 wu6 ziu3?)
David: Do you want an ID card or passport“?
Melody: 要身份証定護照?(jiu3 san1 fan2 zing3 ding6 wu6 ziu3?)
David: Right. So we’ve got two choices and we are giving someone the choice of either A or B.
Melody: 身份証 定 護照 (san1 fan2 zing3 ding6 wu6 ziu3)
David: The critical word here is
Melody: 定 (ding6)
David: “Or”
Melody: 定 (ding6)
David: And usage is easy. We just put this between two nouns.
Melody: 冇錯。(mou5 co3.)
David: Right. In our dialogue of course, it’s ID card or passport.
Melody: 身份証 定 護照 (san1 fan2 zing3 ding6 wu6 ziu3 )
David: But you can use any nouns for this.
Melody: 係呀,冇錯。(hai6aa3, mou5 co3.)
David: Right. So you could say passport or driver's license.
Melody: 護照 定 駕駛證 (wu6 ziu3 ding6 gaa3 sai2 zing3 )
David: Do you want my passport or my driver’s license.
Melody: 你要護照 定 駕駛證?(nei5 jiu3 wu6 ziu3 ding6 gaa3 sai2 zing3?)
David: Or if you are traveling, you can ask someone, China or Hong Kong?
Melody: 中國定香港?(zung1 gwok3 ding6 hoeng1 gong2?)
David: Do you want to go to China or Hong Kong?
Melody: 你要去中國定香港?(nei5 jiu3 heoi3 zung1 gwok3 ding6 hoeng1 gong2?)
David: If you are still having trouble with Cantonese, you might ask someone if they want to speak English or Cantonese.
Melody: 英文定廣東話? (jing1 man2 ding6 gwong2 dung1 waa2?)
David: Do you want to speak English or Cantonese?
Melody: 你哋想講英文定廣東話?(nei5 dei6 soeng2 gong2 jing1 man2 ding6 gwong2 dung1 waa2?)
David: Do you want to speak English or Cantonese?
Melody: 你想講英文定廣東話?(nei5 soeng2 gong2 jing1 man2 ding6 gwong2 dung1 waa2?)
David: And if you remember, in our last lesson, we covered how to buy a computer. When you go to the store, the salesperson might ask you, do you want a laptop or a desktop computer.
Melody: 你想要手提電腦定枱式電腦?(nei5 soeng2 jiu3 sau2 tai4 din6 nou5 ding6 toi4 sik1 din6 nou5?)
David: Do you want a laptop or a desktop?
Melody: 你想要手提電腦定枱式電腦?(nei5 soeng2 jiu3 sau2 tai4 din6 nou5 ding6 toi4 sik1 din6 nou5?)
David: So this is actually – it’s a really easy grammar point right?
Melody: 係呀,冇錯。(hai6 aa3, mou5 co3.)
David: It is just one sound.
Melody: 定 (ding6)
David: You just have to get used to putting it in between two nouns.
Melody: 除咗名詞之外,動詞都可以。(ceoi4 zo2 ming4 ci4 zi1 ngoi6, dung6 ci4 dou1 ho2 ji3.)
David: You just have to remember to put it between two nouns or two verbs.
Melody: 冇錯。動詞都可以。(mou5 co3. dung6 ci4 dou1 ho2 ji3.)
David: Yes. Do you want to eat or shop?
Melody: 你想食飯定行街?(nei5 soeng2 sik6 faan6 ding6 haang4 gaai1?)

David: Right. That’s all the time we have. Before we let you go that we do want to remind you, we have premium transcripts on the site.
Melody: 如果你哋有任何問題,上嚟睇下。(jyu4 gwo2 nei5 dei6 jau5 jam6 ho4 man6 tai4, soeng5 lai4 tai2 haa5.)
David: Right. We’ve written down the vocab lists, the dialogues, everything that we talked about, it’s there in the PDF.
Melody: 非常之有用。(fei1 soeng4 zi1 jau5 jung6.)
David: Yeah it’s really useful especially for reviewing things the day after.

Hello Vincent,

筆記本係手提電腦。

bat1 gei3 bun2 hai6 sau2 tai4 din6 nou5.

A laptop is a hand-held computer.

筆記本(bat1 gei3 bun2) ~ notebook

筆記(bat1 gei3)~ notes, recording in wrtiting

筆(bat1)~ pen

記(gei3)~ remember, record

本(bun2)~ book, script

手提電腦(sau2 tai4 din6 nou5)~ laptop

手提(sau2 tai4)~ portable

手(sau2)~ hand

提(tai4)~ carry

電腦(din6 nou5)~ computer

手提電話(sau2 tai4 din6 waa2)~ mobile phone

當你登機時,請出示你張登機證。

dong1 nei5 dang1 gei1 si4, cing2 ceot1 si6 nei5 zoeng1 dang1 gei1 zing3.

When boarding a plane, please show your boarding pass.

You are right that 當......時(dong1........si4) mean "when...... at the time". The word 當時(dong1 si4) means "at that time" or

"while". For example, 佢當時好忙。(keoi5 dong1 si4 hou2 mong4) ~ He was very busy at that time.

Most of the time 當(dong1) and 時(si4) are used together.

In the vocabulary sentence for "hand-held" (Sau2 tai4)("筆記本係手提電腦。bat1 gei3 bun2 hai6 sau2 tai4 din6 nou5. A laptop is a hand-held computer."), what does "bat1"筆, "gei3"記 and "bun2"本 mean, individually and together if they form a word together? Does "sau2 tai4 din6 nou5" also mean a "smartphone" instead of laptop or is there a different word for smartphone?

In the vocabulary sentence for "boarding pass" (dang1 gei1 zing3)("dong1 nei5 dang1 gei1 si4, cing2 ceot1 si6 nei5 zoeng1 dang1 gei1 zing3. When boarding a plane, please show your boarding pass."), do "dong"當 and "si4"時 together there mean "when" or "at the time" and if so, must "dong"當 and "si4"時 always be separated by a clause or phrase? Also, can "dong"當 ever be used alone (without "si4"時) to mean "when: or "at the time" (as short, as I think I've seen elsewhere)? Thank you, again!

Hello Vincent,

申請新護照需要三張照片。

san1 cing2 san1 wu6 ziu3 seoi1 jiu3 saam1 zoeng1 ziu3 pin2。

To apply for a new passport, you need three copies of your photo.

照片(ziu3 pin2) ~ photograph, picture

照 ziu3 - shine, illumine

片 pin3 - flat, thin piece, film

張(zoeng1) ~ the measure word for the objects that are flat such as paper, ticket, table, etc.

應該係喺機場,或者喺入關口嗰度發出。

(jing3 goi1 hai6 hai2 gei1 coeng4, waak6 ze2 hai2 jap6 gwaan1 hau2 go2 dou6 faat3 ceot1.)

You are right that 入口(jap6 hau2) means "the entrance".

關口(gwaan1 hau2) means the "custom pass" because 海關(hoi2 gwaan1) means "Customs".

嗰度(go2 dou6) ~ there

嗰 go2 - that

度 dou6 - place

So 呢度(ni1 dou6) means "here".

喺入關口嗰度(hai2 jap6 gwaan1 hau2 go2 dou6) ~ just over there at the entrance of the gate.

發出(faat3 ceot1) ~ to send out, generate

In the second vocabulary sentence for "passport" ("san1 cing2 san1 wu6 ziu3 seoi1 jiu3 saam1 zoeng1 ziu3 pin2. To apply for a new passport, you need three copies of your photo."), what do "ziu3" 照 and "pin2" 片 mean individually, and together if they form a word together, and does "zoeng1" 張 there literally mean "copies" or is it just a measure word for photos?

In Melody's second sentence ("jing3 goi1 hai6 hai2 gei1 coeng4, waak6 ze2 hai2 jap6 gwaan1 hau2 go2 dou6 faat3 ceot1."), do "jap6 入.... hau2"口 mean "entrance" (to customs) or do they have separate meanings ("enter" and "mouth"), and does "go2 dou6" 嗰度mean something other than "there" (because "there" seems somewhat superfluous or repetitious as the location was already just specified ["hai2 jap6 gwaan1 hau2"])? Finally, what does "faat3 ceot1" 發出 mean? Thank you very much, again!

Hello 金漢坤,

Thank you for your comment.

Literally 駕駛( gaa3 sai2) means "to drive" and 證(zing3) means "the certificate or the proof".

Sometimes we can also use 駕駛執照( gaa3 sai2 zap1 ziu3) when we refer to "driver's license". 車牌(ce1 paai4) means "the number plate" most of the time. But you can also say 考車牌(haau2 ce1 paai4) which means " to take the test to get the driver's license" because 考(haau2) means "to take a test or exam" in this case.

Usually we don't use 駕駛證 but 車牌 is used in daily life.
