Cantonese Survival phrases, Lesson 38. Hotel Part 2. In our last lesson, we learned how to check into a hotel with the sentences 我訂咗房(ngo5 deng6 zo2 fong2). I’ve booked a room and 我要一間房(ngo5 jiu3 jat1 gaan1 fong2) I would like a room. Today we will learn how to check out. Our first phrase is, what time is check out. In Cantonese, this is 幾點退房?( gei2 dim2 teoi3 fong2) What time is check out? 幾點退房?( gei2 dim2 teoi3 fong2) Let’s break it down by syllable. 幾點 退 房?( gei2 dim2 teoi3 fong2) Now let’s hear it once again. 幾點退房?( gei2 dim2 teoi3 fong2) The first word 幾(gei2) means how many or how much in Cantonese. Let’s hear it one more time 幾(gei2). Then you have 點(dim2) which we’ve learned earlier but here it means clock time 點(dim2) together 幾點?(gei2 dim2) means what time, 幾點?(gei2 dim2) what time. After that you have 退(teoi3) which is to quit 退(teoi3), 退(teoi3), 幾點退房?( gei2 dim2 teoi3 fong2). Following 退(teoi3) we have 房(fong2). This literally means room 房(fong2), 房(fong2), 幾點退房?( gei2 dim2 teoi3 fong2). What time is checkout? 幾點退房?( gei2 dim2 teoi3 fong2). Now let’s look at some words you might need while staying in a hotel. Here are some things you might want to ask for. Towel 毛巾(mou4 gan1) 毛巾(mou4 gan1) toothbrush 牙刷(ngaa4 caat3) 牙刷(ngaa4 caat3) toothpaste 牙膏(ngaa4 gou1) 牙膏(ngaa4 gou1) shampoo 洗頭水(sai2 tau4 seoi2) 洗頭水(sai2 tau4 seoi2) soap 番梘(faan1 gaan2) 番梘(faan1 gaan2) Now let’s try asking for this. Saying I’d like soap is 我要番梘(ngo5 jiu3 faan1 gaan2). I would like soap 我要番梘(ngo5 jiu3 faan1 gaan2). How about asking for a towel 我要毛巾(ngo5 jiu3 mou4 gan1). I would like a towel 我要毛巾(ngo5 jiu3 mou4 gan1). I would like a towel. Now let’s try asking for more toothpaste. 我要多啲牙膏(ngo5 jiu3 do1 di1 ngaa4 gou1) I would like more toothpaste. 我要多啲牙膏(ngo5 jiu3 do1 di1 ngaa4 gou1). Notice the extra sound 多啲(do1 di1) in the middle of the sentence. It means more 多啲(do1 di1). How about asking for more soap 我要多啲番梘(ngo5 jiu3 do1 di1 faan1 gaan2). I would like more soap. 我要多啲番梘(ngo5 jiu3 do1 di1 faan1 gaan2). Let’s practice this sentence with our test question.
