Hi William,

Great observation! Mandarin actually used to be the dialect spoken in Beijing, while Cantonese in Guangdong. So, there is a set of different expressions for family members. You'd encounter more variants when you travel to different provinces!

Yes, we can tell from context. By the way, we tend to call parents as:

ๅชฝๅ’ช [maa1 mi4] - Mommy

็ˆนๅ“‹ [de1 di4] - Daddy

That's another way of distinguishing between them and grandparents. ๐Ÿ˜†

I expected this to be similar to Mandarin, but for some it's completely different!

On my mother's side, we call our grandmothers 'ๅงฅๅงฅโ€™ and grandfathers โ€˜ๅงฅ็ˆทโ€™ which is very different from ๅฉ†ๅฉ† and ๅ…ฌๅ…ฌ. In addition, we call our grandmothers 'ๅฅถๅฅถโ€˜ and grandfathers โ€™็ˆท็ˆท,' which is entirely different from the Cantonese equivalents 'maa4 maa4' and ๅ…ฌๅ…ฌ.

How do you distinguish between 'maa4 maa4' and 'maa4 maa1?' Wouldn't it be a little confusing, or would you know from context?

Hello Jordy Vos,

Thank you for your question. If you have a word in mind that is not in the Vocabulary section of a lesson (or there is no Vocabulary section available at all), you can still add that word to your Word Bank and Flashcard decks. To do so, please head over to your Cantonese Dictionary on the top of the site, look up the word of your choice, and you will find a checkbox and an "Add Selected Words to Word Bank" button.

Hope this helps. If you have any further questions, feel free to contact us again. ๐Ÿ˜‡

Kind regards,

Is there a way to add these words to the flashcards, like with the other courses?
