Chigusa: Okay listeners...
Peter: What’s your new year’s resolution?
Chigusa: And how will you make sure you succeed?
Peter: Let us know your strategies in the comments! But...
Chigusa: ...A lot of people fall short... don’t they, Peter?
Peter: They do. I do. We all do. If you don’t have the blueprint for setting successful goals...
Chigusa: ... if you don’t know how to stick to your learning routines...
Peter: ...or stay motivated, listeners, your efforts will probably fall flat and… and speaking from experience.
Chigusa: Peter, so what is this “secret” blueprint for setting successful goals?
Peter: Well, Chigusa, if our listeners have been following the Inner Circle from the previous years, it’s not such a secret anymore. It’s something I use every month with my language goals and teach our Inner Circle members… But, if you want to know how I went from failing my yearly goals years ago to finally succeeding and learning Japanese, among other languages...
Chigusa: Listeners... by the way, pay attention because this is a GREAT lesson...
Peter: So, a few simple changes to my goal made a massive difference. I now apply these to everyday life goals. So, it’s just not about achieving language learning success, but success in all areas of life. So, the reason is because they work so well. They’re really powerful.
Chigusa: What kinds of changes, Peter?
Peter: So, the first rule and first big change is, set small, measurable goals. Chigusa, most people aim for something vague, or they’ll set a very vague New Years Resolution. Something like, “This year, I’ll become fluent in Japanese,” or “this year I’m going to get in shape.”
Chigusa: Yeah, or “This year, I’ll go to the gym.”
Peter: But these vague goals are very unclear, and they allow you to push back. For example “I’ll get in shape next month.” So if we look at that statement, what is getting into shape exactly? If you don’t define that, without these clear goals to strive for and reach for… I mean, what do you think, Chigusa?
Chigusa: Yeah... you wouldn’t know how to approach them. If your goal is “I want to learn a new language,” but you don’t know how you’ll do it, how often you’ll study, what you’ll use… I don’t think it’ll work out as well.
Peter: Exactly. And that’s how most learners fail. What I do first is, I set deadlines. For example, January 2023, I’m learning French. My first goal is speaking 1 minute of conversation by the deadline of January 31st, 2023. Again my goal is to speak 1 minute of conversation by the deadline, January 31st, 2023.
Chigusa: Just 1 minute? Okay, that’s a pretty small goal.
Peter: It’s a super small goal and if you recall, I studied French before so I’m actually kind of cheating in a way. This should be really easy to attain. However, this year I’m focusing not on just speaking but on passing a standardized test where I’ll need speaking, reading, listening, and lots of other skills. So the reason I'm starting with this conversation though, it’s small and measurable. Let’s compare this; take… getting in shape… how about bodybuilding, working out and lifting weights. You can’t lift hundreds of pounds on your first day at the gym, right?
Chigusa: Right!
Peter: In this case, it’s kind of like we're coming back. We haven't worked out for a while and I used to lift 180 pounds. Do I want to go on the first day and lift 180 pounds?
Chiugsa: I don't think so.
Peter: You’re going to want to start off a lot lower than you last left off a few years ago. And in going back and studying a language you used to learn, there’s going to be an adjusting curve shaking off the cobwebs, reconnecting the pathways for the neurons to fire, the neurological pathways. So the first month, you can take it easy and it will give you quite a bit of confidence. So listeners, you can start speaking... have a 1 or 3-minute conversation in your first month....
Chigusa: And you build up from there. That’s how it works.
Peter: Or at least, that’s how I like to approach it. So for my first month, I am aiming for 1 minute of conversation. In February, I’ll aim for 3. March 5. And this year I know I will get to 30 minutes because I studied the language before. However, I have a lot more areas to focus on than just conversation so I will let you know about those goals in February. But for the first month, I just want to take some time to ease my way back in and get to some resemblance of what I used to be in this language. Kind of like, just get my body in basic shape, not go too hard.
Chigusa: That makes a lot of sense.
Peter: So, listeners, start setting small, monthly goals with a deadline.
Chigusa: Are there any other tips you can give to our listeners for 2023?
Peter: Okay, again, write down a small, measurable goal, set a deadline, and put it somewhere where you’ll see it every day. And… the part about where you can see it every day might sound strange, but believe it or not, seeing the goal will help keep it in your mind and help you reach that goal.
Chigusa: Right, and that doesn’t just apply to language learning, but any goal you’re trying to achieve in life...
Peter: It really works. I cannot tell you how powerful it is. Especially in this digital day and age where it’s so easy to get distracted when you’re sitting in front of a computer, or you open your iPhone to do your language learning or whatever goal you’re trying to reach… there’s notifications that will just get in your way. So, listeners, write it down in a physical form, keep to it, stick it on a fridge, or have something in audio - Siri reminding you, something to keep it front and center. If you take these tips and apply them right now, you’ll see yourself progressing towards your goal.
Chigusa: And once you do that, we challenge you to master a language in 2023.
