Hi guys, welcome back to Cantonese holiday words. In this video, we are going to talk about this very unique holiday in Hong Kong. Hong Kong Special Administrative region Establishment Day, too long.
Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Establishment Day, that is 香港特別行政區成立紀念日(hoeng1 gong2 dak6 bit6 hang4 zing3 keoi1 sing4 lap6 gei2 nim6 jat6). It’s the day when the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region was set up, that means it’s now belonged to China after 1997. 香港特別行政區 (hoeng1 gong2 dak6 bit6 hang4 zing3 keoi1), it’s the special term we have after it got back to China’s embrace. Let’s see what other words we have.
Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Establishment Day 香港特別行政區成立紀念日(hoeng1 gong2 dak6 bit6 hang4 zing3 keoi1 sing4 lap6 gei2 nim6 jat6). It is on every July 1st.
回歸(wui4 gwai1) Reunification.
In 1997, Hong Kong reunited with China. So we say 香港回歸中國(hoeng1 gong2 wui4 gwai1 zung1 gwok3) “Hong Kong United with China”中國 (zung1 gwok3) is China.
遊行(jau4 hang4) protest.
It has been a custom ever since 1997, everybody go on to street to protest about something that the Chinese government did or is doing.
2003年遊行個個都著晒黑色衫。(ji6 ling4 ling4 saam1 nin4 jau4 hang4 go3 go3 dou1 zoek3 saai3 hak1 sik1 saam1.) “Everybody was wearing black tops for the protest on July 1st of 2003.”
行政長官(hang4 zing3 zoeng2 gun1) The chief executive.
行政長官(hang4 zing3 zoeng2 gun1), the chief executive is the person with the highest power in Hong Kong. It’s kind of like a prime minister and the chief executive right now, this is 2015 is CY Leung.
In a sentence, 而家嘅行政長官係梁振英。(ji4 gaa1 ge3 hang4 zing3 zoeng2 gun1 hai6 loeng4 zan3 jing1.) “The chief executive now is CY Leung.”
升旗儀式(sing1 kei4 ji4 sik1) Flag raising ceremony.
So on this day, the 行政長官(hang4 zing3 zoeng2 gun1) the chief executive will have a flag raising ceremony 升旗儀式(sing1 kei4 ji4 sik1). So lot of people go watch it and there is a cocktail party afterwards but only if you are invited, of course.
你去唔去睇升旗儀式呀?(nei5 heoi3 m4 heoi3 tai2 sing1 kei4 ji4 sik1 aa3?) “Do you want to go watch the flag raising ceremony?”
