This Lesson's Honzi is missing the literal translations for all the vocabulary words.In the meantime, can you tell us what the literal translation is for "jau4"郵 and "gin2"郵件 (together "email"), "dang1"登入 and "jap6"登入 (together "to log in"), "cung4"重 and "cit3"設 (together "to reset"), "lau4"瀏, "laam5"覽 and "hei3"器 (altogether "browser"), "mat6"密 and "maa5"碼 (together "password")?

What does "soeng4"嘗 mean in the vocabulary sentence for "si3: to try" ("keoi5 soeng4 si3 sek3 ngo5, daan6 hai6 ngo5 paau2 zau2 zo2. He tried to kiss me, but I ran away.)? Does "soeng4"嘗 change the meaning of "si3"試 (to try) in some way, or does it have its own special meaning or significance? Thank you, again, for your helpful explanations!

Hi Geoffrey,

重新...一... is a common Cantonese expression. Generally speaking, 你要重新開過一次機 is the same as 你要重新開過機, but the extra 一次 emphasizes the repeated action. For examples:

我重新煮過一餐飯 "I cook the meal all over again"

唔合格嘅話,要重新讀過一年書 "If failed, (one) has to re-study for another year"

Despite of its dictionary definitions (to deduce; to infer; deductive), 演繹 also means "to perform (as in karaoke/movie)"

演 (jin2) "to act; to perform"

繹 (jik6) "interpretation of; unravel"

I'm having trouble breaking down the sentences in the vocabulary expansion. Could you please help me interpret?

你要重新開過一次機 - I have not run into this kind of grammar before. I get the meaning of all the words in the sentences, but the "一次" is placed in a weird part of the sentence. Could you give me more examples of this kind of sentence pattern? Could I have also written "你要重新開過機?" I feel like that would imply the "one more time" part of the sentence

佢力求喺演唱會上重新演繹呢首歌. When I look up "演繹" in the dictionary, it gives me the meaning as "to infer, to deduce." Not sure how that is relevant to the sentence. The translation give said it meant "reinvent" or something along those lines. Could you explain? Thanks!

@Lili,

入面 jap6 min6, 入便 jap6 bin6, and even 入邊 jap6 bin1 are used, but they are actually the same, just spoken differently by different families.

And 咩 is 'what', 乜嘢 is 'what thing'.

When would you use 咩 me1 vs 乜嘢 mat1 je5

The phrase "登入" dang1 jap6 meaning to enter/login made me think of another question. 入面 jap6 min6 means inside and so does 入便 jap6 bin6. What's the difference?
