Lesson Transcript

nei5 ho2, ngo5 hai6 Olivia. Hi everybody! I’m Olivia.
Welcome to CantoneseClass101.com’s “saam1 fan1 zung1 gwong2 dung1 waa2”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Cantonese.
In the last lesson, we learned the Cantonese verb “to like”, zung1 ji3. In this lesson, we’ll learn another verb “to go”, and of course we will use this word along with many different destinations.
So imagine someone asks you fong3 gaa3 heoi3 bin1 aa6? That means "Where are you going for your holidays?"
So if you are going on a trip for example, you will say ngo5 heoi3 leoi5 hang4.
[slowly] ngo5 heoi3 leoi5 hang4.
And he’ll probably ask heoi3 bin1 dou6 leoi5 hang4 aa6? “Where are you traveling to?”
Then you can say ngo5 heoi3 ji3 daai6 lei6 “I am going to Italy”
So let’s break down these answers:
First we had:
ngo5 heoi3 which is "I am going to...", followed by leoi5 hang4 which means “trip”, or “travel”.
[slowly] ngo5 heoi3 leoi5 hang4.
Then we had:
ngo5 heoi3, "I am going to...", followed by ji3 daai6 lei6, the Cantonese word for “Italy”.
Very simple.
[slowly] ngo5 heoi3 ji3 daai6 lei6
So now, let’s try adding some action, for instance, if you want to say “I’m going to find a job in Italy”
ngo5 heoi3 ji3 daai6 lei6 wan2 gung1
It starts with the same phrase as “I am going to Italy” ngo5 heoi3 ji3 daai6 lei6, then add the action wan2 gung1 , which means “to find a job” or “job hunting”.
Altogether, we have
[slowly] ngo5 heoi3 ji3 daai6 lei6 wan2 gung1
Want to see more examples? Here they are...
ngo5 heoi3 caan1 teng1 sik6 fan6 → “I’m going to eat at the restaurant”
[slowly] ngo5 heoi3 caan1 teng1 sik6 fan6
ngo5 heoi3 tou4 syu1 gun2 tai2 syu1 → “I’m going to read books at the library”
[slowly] ngo5 heoi3 tou4 syu1 gun2 tai2 syu1
ngo5 heoi3 taai3 hung1 zung2 cyu5 sat6 zap6 → “I’m going to do an internship at NASA”
[slowly] ngo5 heoi3 taai3 hung1 zung2 cyu5 sat6 zap6
Now it’s time for Olivia’s insights
Let’s imagine someone asks you "Where are you going?", and you want to invite him or her to go with you. You can add nei5 heoi3 m4 heoi3? after your answer. Literally it means “are you going?” but it also implies “would you like to go together?”
[slowly] nei5 heoi3 m4 heoi3?
So, in this lesson, we learned how to use the verb heoi3 to talk about your destination and what you are going to do there.
Next time, we’ll learn another very useful verb, lei4.
Do you know what this Cantonese verb means? I’ll be waiting for you with the answer in the next “saam1 fan1 zung1 gwong2 dung1 waa2” lesson. Haa6 ci3 gin3!

放假去邊呀?(fong3 gaa3 heoi3 bin1 aa6?) This means "Where are you going for your holidays?"

How would I ask somebody: where did you go on holiday? (as a past tense question)

Thanks

Hi Mervin,

Thank you for your question. tai2 syu1 means "read books".

For example, 我去圖書館睇書 ngo5 heoi3 tou4 syu1 gun2 tai2 syu1 → "I'm going to read books

at the library." You can find this explanation if you download the PDFs lesson notes transcript which is very useful for reviewing the lesson. file:///C:/Users/KONNO/Downloads/LCITM_L18_030813_canclass101.pdf

Feel free to ask us more question.

Hi Denise,

Almost! We normally put the destination before the action, so it should be 我喺義大利搵工 (ngo5 hai2 ji6 daai6 lei6 wan2 gung1) "I look for a job in Italy".

Sorry! In case we want to say I am looking for a job in Italy. Is it "ngo5 wan2 gung1 hai2 Italy"?

Thank you.
