Eric: Welcome to 3-Minute Cantonese Season 1, Lesson 13 - Who Is It? In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask who someone is in Cantonese.
Body
Eric: First we will learn how to ask 'Who is it?' in Cantonese.
Olivia: [Normal] 邊個呀?(bin1 go3 aa3)
Eric: First is a word meaning 'Who'
Olivia: [Normal] 邊個 [Slow] 邊個 (bin1 go3)
Eric: Last is the final particle.
Olivia: [Normal] 呀 [Slow] 呀(aa3)
Eric: Listen again to the question meaning 'Who is it?'
Olivia: [Slow] 邊個呀? [Normal] 邊個呀?(bin1 go3 aa3)
Eric: Now, imagine you're speaking to a stranger. Here's the way to ask, 'Who is that?'
Olivia: [Normal] 嗰位係邊個呀?(go2 wai2 hai6 bin1 go3 aa3)
Eric: First is a pronoun meaning 'That person'
Olivia: [Normal] 嗰位 [Slow] 嗰位 (go2 wai2)
Eric: Next is the verb meaning 'is'
Olivia: [Normal] 係 [Slow] 係(hai6)
Eric: Next is the pronoun meaning 'who'
Olivia: [Normal] 邊個 [Slow] 邊個(bin1 go3)

Olivia: If someone knocked on your door all of the sudden, the question you can use to see who’s there is 邊個呀? (bin1 go3 aa3) This is the common way to say "Who is it?”

You are right that 佢( keoi5 ) can be used to refer to "He or She" and the plural form is {佢哋(keoi5 dei6)~ they}. It is spoken and colloquial expression.

For the formal and written way, there are different Chinese letters to indicate the gender.


他(taa1)~He

她(taai) ~She

祂(taa1)~God

I have noticed in other lessons the word for he, she or they is 佢. How do you indicate the gender in the grammar?
