Cantonese survival phrases lesson 21, Internet Café. In this lesson, we will learn about a place crucial to your travels in Hong Kong. In this lesson, we will learn about a place crucial to your travels in the modern age, the internet café. You can find internet cafes in the business districts in Hong Kong however if you are in a residential area, there is a possibility that you won’t find any as most people have the internet at home. Now let’s imagine that you found one and you are at a reception desk and you need to ask how much the connection is and for how long. In Cantonese, we say 唔該,幾錢一個鐘?(m4 goi1, gei2 cin2 jat1 go3 zung1). Now let’s hear it one more time 唔該, 幾錢一個鐘?(m4 goi1, gei2 cin2 jat1 go3 zung1). Now this literally means excuse me, how much is the hour or excuse me, how much is one hour. Let’s break it down by syllable and hear it one more time. 唔 該, 幾 錢 一 個 鐘?(m4 goi1, gei2 cin2 jat1 go3 zung1) Now the first phrase we have is 唔該(m4 goi). You should notice well by now. 唔該(m4 goi) excuse me or please. 幾 錢(gei2 cin2) is how much. 幾 錢(gei2 cin2) How much.
We’ve covered this in previous lessons. 幾 錢(gei2 cin2) How much. You can use this phrase when you want to know the price of the clothes or the price of anything 幾 錢(gei2 cin2) and it’s followed by 一 個鐘(jat1 go3 zung1). It’s literally one hour or one clock 一 個鐘(jat1 go3 zung1). Now first we have the #1 一(jat1) and it’s followed by the most common measure word in Cantonese 個(go3) and finally we have 鐘(zung1). It’s a clock or an hour 鐘(zung1), 一 個鐘(jat1 go3 zung1). It means one hour or a clock. 一 個鐘(jat1 go3 zung1) Now let’s hear the whole sentence again 唔該, 幾錢一個鐘?(m4 goi1, gei2 cin2 jat1 go3 zung1). Excuse me, how much per hour and they will probably answer you with something such as the price of the connection per hour and then 一 個鐘(jat1 go3 zung1). Now let’s say if the price is HKD20 per hour, we will have first HKD20. We have covered that in previous lesson how to say 20. In Cantonese, it’s 二十(ji6 sap6). Now let’s hear it again 二十(ji6 sap6). And the word for Hong Kong Dollar is 蚊(man1), 蚊(man1). So it’s 二十蚊(ji6 sap6 man1) HKD20 and then we have per hour 一 個鐘(jat1 go3 zung1). So let’s put them together 二十蚊一 個鐘(ji6 sap6 man1 jat1 go3 zung1) HKD20 per hour. 二十蚊一 個鐘(ji6 sap6 man1 jat1 go3 zung1) HKD20 per hour.
Now let’s go over all the sentences we’ve just learned. Now firstly we now have to ask for how much 幾 錢(gei2 cin2). First we know how to ask how much 幾 錢(gei2 cin2) and then we can say, excuse me, how much is per hour 唔該, 幾錢一個鐘?(m4 goi1, gei2 cin2 jat1 go3 zung1) Now let’s hear it again 唔該, 幾錢一個鐘?(m4 goi1, gei2 cin2 jat1 go3 zung1). And they probably answer you with HKD20 per hour 二十蚊一 個鐘(ji6 sap6 man1 jat1 go3 zung1). Let’s hear it again 二十蚊一 個鐘(ji6 sap6 man1 jat1 go3 zung1). Now in Hong Kong, we call internet cafes by the same name, internet café. Alternatively young people call them 網吧(mong3 baa1) which literally means net café 網吧(mong3 baa1). In Hong Kong, young people often go to internet cafes or 網吧(mong3 baa1) to play online games but they are not that popular in general. And smallest households have the internet. So online gaming is mainly what people use internet cafes for. If you are regular, you can get a membership that gives you discount in most cafes. If you only come for a one time visit, the clerk usually sets your computer up for you from the counter and just gives you the seat’s number. So today we’ve covered another phrase that you can use right away. Before we go, we’d like you to practice what you’ve learned. As always, I will give you the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud and you have a few seconds before I give you the answers. 加 油(gaa1 jau2)!
Excuse me, how much is per hour? 唔該, 幾錢一個鐘?(m4 goi1, gei2 cin2 jat1 go3 zung1) HKD20 per hour 二十蚊一 個鐘(ji6 sap6 man1 jat1 go3 zung1). All right, that about does it for today. Thank you for listening.
